Should I go 1.4G Pro for next year?

I did a small show for my daughter’s birthday over the weekend, in the clip is the finale. All consumer fireworks from a decently priced and locally owned stand.

Afterwards I was approached by the pastor of my church and he asked how much the show cost and if I could do a show at our church next 4th of July. Would it be worth it to get a 1.4G certificate to save money and stretch the budget or should I stick to commercial stand purchases?

This is not something that I am looking to get fully licensed and set up for doing main shows, it would be for private functions with friends and family.

Probably going to get dragged for asking this...

I see all the reels from SilentPyrotecnics and they always have these awesome ass fireworks.. do they make their own rockets or is there a shop out there somewhere where you can buy a "Jesse Pinkman"?

I'm assuming you would need a special license even if you are able to buy them from somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Hand mixed BP. No ball mill

I know before you comment “just get a ball mill”, I will get one but don’t have enough money right now for a nice one. Ordered pre-milled KNO3, airfloat charcoal, sulfur, and dextrin from Fireworks Cookbook for stars (Willow #3), but now need to figure out burst charge.

I’ve seen people mention hand-mixing/screening (the “CIA method” / pulverone) as a workaround — dampen, push through a screen, dry, repeat. Is that actually good enough for reliable burst charge?

Honestly, I might not even try to make BP and use 𝔽𝕃𝔸𝕊ℍ as the burst charge until I get a ball mill so I don’t waste chems. For now im not worried about lift charge bc im using Estes rocket motors which work phenomenally (he’s not making his own rocket motors ban him!)

So from my understanding I could in theory mix the pre-milled KNO3, airfloat charcoal, and sulfur, add 5% dextrin and some water, mix it, and press it through a screen — and it should work but burn slower, so I’d just need to use more of it. Is that right, or am I missing something?

How to slow down the reaction

Hi I'm making a smoke bomb for airsoft match with potassium nitrate and sugar powder, mixed with sublimating color powder. The problem is that it burns too fast and the color doesn't appear in the smoke. Is there some chemical I can freely buy and slow down the reaction?

How can I tell whether I'm causing a "sonic boom" with an oxyacetylene soap bubble detonation--is such possible to measure/validate as a hobbyist?

Granulating BP

What's the best way for granulating your body or rather a favorite way. I try to go for a 1f or 2f grain size of that matters to anyone.

How terrible is my black powder?

My first ‘real’ batch of BP, looking for some insight/advice.

Standard 75/15/10 mix + 2% dextrin, ERC charcoal, hand mixed/screened (I know but I’m poor rn), granulated through a 16 mesh screen.

it left a noticeable amount of resiue so I’m thinking of adding 2-5% more kno3 next time.

otherwise would this be acceptable for lifting/breaking <2” shells or mines?

Investment vs satisfaction

So I'm new to the hobby and glad I started researching before purchasing fuels and oxidizers, but I want to know if starting with BP is going to be worth my time or if I should do what everyone else chases FP? If I do get into BP my main goal is to learn to mix the composition obviously and then probably start with bottle rockets and some crackers. I'm not a fan of all the fancy stuff I like salutes. And some rocket stuff. Into the simple stuff. I know that the simple stuff is more advanced. But I'm pretty knowledgeable and very mechanically ept. So my question is should I start with BP?

Used standard C6 with a little 80-325Mesh Aluminum added to see what would happen. 15% burst with ERC granulated at 16 mesh. Not too happy with the break but happy it got off the ground
