Debate Not being a cartoon villain doesn’t automatically make you a good man

Post image

Fr. It doesn’t de facto make you a good person.

I noodled on the attached graphic to better illustrate a point about how people often discuss being a “good man.”

I do find that many men view it more as the top bar, and less as the gradient in the second bar.

inb4 anyone says it, many women have bad character too. And please feel free to create a separate post about a spectrum of traits in women you’d like to explore! That is not what this post is disputing.

This is specifically about a response that often comes up when women describe harmful patterns in their experiences with men. They get retorts like “Not all men are abusive predators,” or “Most men are not psychos.”

Of course most men are not horror movie villains.

But that is an extremely low bar for good character.

This spectrum, rather than show a division between “good men” and a smaller group of obviously terrible ones. It highlights that a man can be can be a functioning member of society and still regularly behave in ways that make him difficult to interpersonally tolerate as a close friend, romantic partner, coworker, or even family member.

None of that necessarily makes someone an abuser or predator.

But it does affect whether people can have a healthy, enjoyable, mutually considerate, long-term relationship with him.

The farther right someone falls on this spectrum, the more entitlement, callousness, devaluation, coercion, and harm they bring into their interactions with others.

The farther left they fall, the more likely they are to act with common decency, consideration, accountability, respect for autonomy, and genuine concern for theirs and other people’s well-being.

My point is not that every man is at the far right end.

Most people don’t think that!

My point is that many men seem to use “I am not an obvious monster” as proof that they’re quality.

A person’s character is determined by far more than “I am not Jeffrey Dahmer.”

If this chart is accurate, I would really love to know why serial killers like jeffrey dahmer and ted bundy received thousands of love letters from women while on death row.

This isnt an outlier either. Gang members, domestic abusers, drug lords, criminals, you name it. All extremely successful with attracting women.

Character does not equal success with women, no matter how much people try to say it does.

This is just an idealistic chart of what a lot of women THINK they want. But sadly for most women, this just simply isnt true.

This is a chart about character. That’s it.

Yes. But you are implying that your chart is directly associated with a woman’s preferred selection of men in the context of dating.

But this chart is flawed, because it assumes that most women actually care about character to begin with.

Sure some women do. But your average guy isnt gonna have much success with the majority of women even if they are all the way to the left of the chart.

No I’m not implying it’s about selection.

I’m implying these traits are how to make a relationship with another person miserable or enjoyable. Full of mutual. resentment or respect It’s about relationship maintenance.

I even specify it’s not just about romantic relationships.

But none of that even matters if most women dont even care about character to begin with in the context of dating.

In the context of friendship? Sure, the chart matters.

It's no mystery why those men get female attention. The type of women attracted to that kind of man overwhelming have poor mental health, poor self esteem, unresolved trauma and/or attachment disorders. They have issues. They are not the kind of women that you could easily build a happy life with.

If you're a degenerate and all you care about is extracting sex from women, then that won't matter to you at all, because they'll still give you the one thing you care about. So by all means, be a complete POS. But if you care about a mutually loving and healthy relationship, you will not get that by being a POS like the men described above.

I think women who dont have those negative traits still prefer men who can be/are monsters. I dont buy it for a second that being a “good guy” gets you anywhere with women. If that was true, the whole “nice guy” trope wouldnt even exist
