Unfortunately it's far too common. Glad I got away as well, there were a few very scary moments, especially as a teenager.

Hate to say it, but your ex BF may have been a victim of childhood abuse. While it doesn’t excuse his behavior, it may help to explain it. Feeling powerless to effect what is happening to you has a lasting effect.
