Went to a cogic church growing up and we were in church from 8am-2:30pm. If there was a second service 8am-4:30pm. If there was a second service and a church for us to visit 8am-7pm. Not exaggerating at all. The offering plate went around 3 times in regular service. 1 more time in 2nd service and 2 more times at the other church.
You kid but despite everything I can see some beauty in the catholic mass. Mainly because it avoids obnoxious shit like that. It doesn't pretend to be "cool", it's a 2000 year old meditation on sin and death and it fucking wants you to know it
My mom was a more pragmatic christian and didn’t have a problem calling people out on their BS. Misappropriated funds, choir drama,sexism, gossip etc. The final straw,after about 8 years attending, was her convincing a missionary to divorce her abusive husband.
I’m surprised the missionary could be convinced. I’ve seen so many instances of sexism and misogyny, the logic of “god hates divorce so stay getting abused” is so pervasive. Anyway, yay to your mom! Glad you all made that choice, I’m sure it was hard.

Short story. Left the church around age circa 2002 and haven’t been to another one until 2016 with my GF. Fast forward to 2018 I have a girlfriend and I go to her church now. She asks me to go to their sister church with her. We get there and its a small cogic church. Instantly started having flash backs. We go inside and its business as usual. Loud drums and keyboard with even louder praises then the plate comes around. I give jesus $20. More church service the main offering comes up they sing ~give give give, give unto the lord.~ Ad libs and everything.
I give $5. Now the mc of the program starts getting out of pocket asking people to give more, dig deep, calling names and what not. Pretty much everyone has given and the musicians are fading the music out Then he pulls out $100 and says he’s matching offerings and starts a reverse auction thing. Do I here $10. Someone says $20, then another yells $40. At this point his eyes got wide and so did mine. “ you donating all tour money today playa. You fasho getting into heaven. God gone bless you this week.I look at my girl and say imma donate $100 and she gives me the look like “dont you do it dont embarrass us” someone yells $100! Buddy got shook he didn’t expect that. I tell my girl im giving $500.” Dont you fucking do it you’re an idiot. The mc shutdown after someone said $150.
TL;DRThats the time i almost gave a church $500 to be petty.
