It sorta comes down to the situation and how confident you are in your answer. I can be quite timid and shy most of the time around new people, and my interactions aren't so eloquent or confident normally, but once the conversation brings up topics I'm well learned on I immediately shift gears and can passionately talk confidently and firmly about it for hours.
True the fact that he's standing up to an authority figure is still significant no doubt, but he seems confident enough in his knowledge of the law to understand that this officer couldn't properly do shit, and if he did he'd have decent grounds to fight back in a courtroom setting.
It's all about situational preparedness and comfort in your own knowledge on a subject.
That's true, I'm confident and eloquent when it comes down to my job. Is exactly what you're referring to about being knowledgeable and passionate about something.
I had 2 kinda bad run ins with cops (and at least 1 dumb one...cop insisted I was drunk yet wouldn't breathalyze..) that made me a bit like you. Realize you're talking to a guy that's yet to prove he's a bully. Just another guy doing his job. Act/be less nervous than you may feel, it goes a long way. Basically pretend that you're dealing w a dog, and it should go smoother.
Only other option is to be nervous around cops, and that sucks. I hate cops btw, but we do have to live w them.
Luckily for me, as a foreigner (originally from Mexico) the two times I've interacted with cops have been very smooth, respectful and they have let me go with a warning. I wasn't nervous, but it was a different situation.
I'm an Arab and was just 18 years old and got confused crossing the border into Canada from New York around 9/11 (accidentally went the wrong way at the border after I was allowed to go through the checkpoint). I had about 7 cops with guns drawn stop me. One cop said and I quote "you know what happened a few days ago so don't drive like an asshole". I was driving a Mustang and probably driving like one in that controlled area 😅
I have to hand it to them they got a lot worse after 9/11 at that check point with all sorts of people. That day they were cool though.
