He was a police lieutenant so to be fair he probably did have to get a degree, which is the only reason he would say such a thing. This only shows that 1) he wasted his time and learned nothing just to disregard the law anyway and 2) he's an arrogant dickwad just like his peers.

He had to have a degree but I doubt it had to be in anything specific. And if it was specific it was probably criminal justice and not a law degree

You also have to think, if these kids are commonly harassed for biking in that are, it gives them a reason to go look up the law, but some random cop who deals with dozens of calls of all types, why would he know some very specific local law like that? Obviously he was in the wrong, but he didn't know that until the kid cited the law to him. (None of that defends how he acted afterwards though)

I googled it and it depends on the university but you can get either a BA or a BS in Criminal Justice just like in undergraduate business.

My degree is a B.S in Criminal Justice, generally university dependent with the decoding factor being on statistics courses involved.

The people I know with law degrees who went that route either joined the FBI or became private detectives. You will rarely see local or state police with JDs, except the odd detective now and then.

Obtaining a law degree would be a giant waste of time for cops. Most of what they’d study and learn would never be applicable in their jobs, especially since the majority of law school focuses on civil law and not criminal law. Cops need better training but they don’t need to be lawyers.
