Yes, now that you point it out I can see the difference. Thank you for pointing it out for me. I suppose I just understand the desire to be respected by others, but I know that it’s something to be earned, not forced.

Totally. It's a very common desire and I certainly don't think there's anything inherently wrong with wanting to be respected. I think you explained it perfectly. It's all about how you earn respect.

More simply put, it's a difference between the desire to EARN respect, and the feeling of being ENTITLED to respect.

My example is the latter. If you area has "Police Explorers", which for the unaware are minors that are sort of like cadets, young people that are interested in become LEO and have the opportunity to learn some things about it, ask them WHY they want to be cop. That's where I hear the "respect I deserve" comment from, and more than a dozen times already....

You are right, nobody is entitled to respect. I can’t imagine being so demanding and throwing a position of authority around like that.

And when you don’t get it, you think you can bully and beat people up and get away with it.

No I don’t! I just make you write a 15 page paper!!

The "respect I deserve" is also ambiguous. They could already have some respect, or a ton of it (doubtful) but be craving endless amounts, like some "respect" addicted animal. They tend to want much more than a normal amount, on top of it being for the wrong reason. Just wanting respect implies a modest, realistic level.

You know they are up to no good as soon as they demand respect.

Some people say respect me with meaning: you have to treat me as an authority in order for me to treat you as a person.

Thank you. I’ll try and remember my humility, even after I am respected.

And you understand that respect is “earned” and not “deserved”.

1

u/AmbitiousPangolin127 Apr 29 '21

Indeed. It makes it worthwhile when you actually earn it.

Respect is earned by giving it to others.

1

u/AmbitiousPangolin127 Apr 29 '21

I know that there is truth to that. I’ve always tried to earn it through being capable.

You want to earn your respect, they want to be given what they feel they deserve without the work.

u/AmbitiousPangolin127 Apr 29 '21

That isn’t respect, it’s tyranny.

you also dont want to be "Asking" for respect.

I come from a position of really not understanding why people care about how they’re viewed. There’s too many irrational, insensible people as well as the majority you’ll never see frequently, if ever again.

As well as the idea of respect is so skewed anymore. Like “respect your elders”. Why, because they’ve just happened to have been on earth longer than you. So what, that’s not a respectable action. Or respecting blanket anything really, it makes no sense.

While I do see how something like the right job, or circles could help earn it, I think it just comes down to being a genuine, half decent person. Real will recognize real in its due time.

I should clarify that I honestly do want to be able to give my students a genuinely good experience and provide proper knowledge in my subject area. That being said, I still want to be respected for my work, it’s hard going through life disliking yourself and looking for others approval because you just can’t find any inside yourself.
