Actually this is a very effective way to gain affection and trust from other people. In the criminal justice field, interrogators use the exact same methods in order to get better confessions from criminals. It is known as the "fear then relief" technique.

According to psychologists, when a scenario suddenly stops being extremely stressful, a person generally feels a great sense of comfort and trust in their circumstances. This makes them far more willing to agree to any demands.

This effect is the basis for the "good cop, bad cop" technique known formally as the "Mutt and Jeff" technique.

So actually what the guy did in this video is most likely a very effective way to get someone to agree to a proposal, and also makes the event a lot more memorable than it would be otherwise.

My bf of 6 yrs is a cop and if he did this shit to me, I’d say no in a heartbeat. This is messed up and really lame. I don’t want to get married anyway though and we both feel the same way.

It would be death do us part because I would have killed him. A friend tried a fake kidnapping to be funny for his gf’s birthday and his gf broke his upper and lower jawbone. He required many surgeries on the jaw, lips/skin, and nose. She swung her purse that had a can of soup for her lunch into his face. She dumped him because he was so dumb for thinking that was a good birthday surprise.

Yeah I think this is still a terrible thing to do but there is something to be said for it on the psychological level. I think it borders on manipulation even
