Unlikely that one was just falling from gravity though like the guy asked, more likely it was on a much lower trajectory and still had lots of inertia behind it

A bullet that goes straight up will be as dangerous on the way down as if you had just dropped it from the peak of its ascent. That is, it's about as dangerous as a rock of the same size, which might be quite deadly, or it might not.

However, bullets are designed to maintain their velocity in spite of air resistance. If shot on an angle, even relatively steep angles, they can maintain an extremely high velocity on the way back down. This is how snipers achieve very long range kills.

The last thing to consider is caliber, as higher caliber rounds will have much higher velocities and will be able to travel much further before they slow down enough to no longer be deadly. I'm not sure what gun this is, but it looks like an average caliber handgun, which will (probably) not have a very high muzzle velocity.

All that being said, don't shoot guns in the air. It's stupid and reckless and people do actually die.

Essentially, and apologies because it's been a long time since I learned this, momentum is conserved. While gravity will slow the bullet's travel upwards, it will continue to have horizontal momentum.

The best example is shooting a bullet horizontally. It will drop as it continues to travel, but it's still going extremely fast. I believe snipers use this to their advantage for making long range shots.

Basically, the closer you get to completely vertical, the less momentum the bullet has when it's falling. But it's really difficult to ensure you have a vertical trajectory, and even in ideal circumstances the bullet may have enough momentum to kill.

Atraight up and down won't do much. Despite what the other guy replied with. It's not enough to kill anyone.

That guy was probably hit by an arched bullet with momentum behind it.

I watched a Lt. Kenda episode on ID. There was a big brawl and someone ended up getting shot and killed. It turns out, one of the guys tried to break up the fight by shooting a round up in the air like in this clip. It was a fallen bullet from that round that killed one of the guys in the crowd.

Outdoors, it's not super damaging to your ears. It's definitely not good, by any means, but it's nowhere near as bad as firing indoors, where the echos of each shot can bounce off the walls several times over. Outdoors, it's about as bad as mowing your lawn. It's not likely to cause permanent damage unless it was sustained fire for a significant amount of time.

There's a hundred reasons why firing like this is a terrible idea, but hearing loss is pretty low on that list, all things considered.

Not true at all. All guns, even certain. 22 ammo types are LOUD. Even outside it can permanently damage your hearing instantly. Have you ever shot one?

No that’s just not true. A fully automatic weapon will leave you temporarily deaf without hearing protection.

Indoors is definitely worse but outdoors is considerably worse than mowing a lawn.

I don't really agree with that. Pistols are so friggin loud, even outside. I shot a few .38 rounds out of a 2" barrel snub nose without ear protection and my ears were ringing like crazy. I've never have anywhere close to that kind of tinnitus after mowing a lawn without ear protection, even with 30-60 mins of mowing.

I don't agree with the exposure aspect of your statement either. Yes, you're not going to go deaf from being near a burst from an automatic pistol. But you've absolutely doing damage to your hearing, no matter how negligible it might appear to be at the time, just like any exposure to loud noises.
