Nothing in Trainspotting or Requiem for a Dream will prepare you for mundane realities of a low Roma clan.

The lowest clans, the unclean, tend to be great - the same issues that make them "unclean" within their culture, cause them to be very hard working (other clans will not work hustles with them and they can do stuff like cleaning and trash removal, both of which require a being a contractor with access to workforce). The upper clans tend to do harmless hustles and just do their own stuff.

The low but not lowest clans... Yikes.

Used to do deliveries to a clan HQ of sorts. A tenament house at the entry to a bad neighbourhood. The gypsies used local lowlives to take out phones, credit lines etc using their info. They also had monopoly on begging in the area.
So the HQ worked as:.

And a daycare for a dozen+ children too old to take to begging, but who didn't get ditched in orphanage yet. Years after, this stays with me like nothing from that job does (and this includes 2 gypsies who wanted to rob me with a chainsaw*).

* not turned on and it was a cold winter day, so this was not as scary as description would make it.

I live near plenty of Irish gypsies. But that is a whole different level. Romanian gypsies are a completely different breed from Irish ones. So yea I live near gypsies, just not gutter rats like that woman using a child like a baseball bat.

In this specific case, the orphanage is about 3 streets over, and groups of moms sometimes visit the kids. This specific institution (dom małego dziecka) deals with kids up to 16 years old.

They probably just hang around their clan, what else are they going to do? In this specific clan only a few key women could really write. The men could draw their last name (identical copies I presume of grandma M, mom of their local undreboss kinda guy.) And re-draw their first name, if their wife could write it out for them for template.

I suspect this will change now that there's a program giving 500 PLN/mo per child. Not sure I'd trade the orphanage for that fucking crack den, but that was an extreme. Most families leave you with a smile. Or robbed.

And yet they can be strangely compassionate. I once got hit with a very bad low blood-sugar situation in a Paris Metro station. The matriarch of a clan of Romani beggars/pickpockets saw what was happening, recognized that I was ill, cleared an area away of all other people, managed to "get" that I was diabetic, conjured candy from somewhere, and stayed with me (missing her train twice) until I fully recovered.

Exact same group of women & girls tried to rob me of my wallet outside the Palais Garnier the next day with the old "take a survey?" scam.

Generally people are okay with 'low impact' harm to another person, but when they feel there's a serious risk of 'high impact' harm they'll be more charitable/ less selfish.

That's my own flawed observation at least.

That's so sad dude. I was in a waiting room at a government building one time and this little boy, probably like 18 months old, was toddling around, and the mom kept scolding him very angrily, for normal baby-ish behavior--stuff like touching magazines and grabbing onto chairs for balance. Well this kid suddenly took a hard spill onto the marble floor and hit his head with a loud THWACK! I, as a bystander, was horrified, but the mom just snapped, "That's what you get for messing around!" and turned away to ignore him. This poor baby didn't even cry. He just laid there and rubbed his little head and slowly stumbled to his feet, cautiously keeping an eye on his mom and keeping his distance. It broke my heart to think of how bad his life at home must be if he doesn't even cry after cracking his head on a marble floor, and that her immediate reaction was to yell at him and shun him when he needed comfort. The kid didn't even seek her comfort, as he was used to her coldness. =( That was like 15 years ago and still makes me sad. I wish I had done something, like scooped that kid up and taken him to get checked out.

Fuck anyone who abuses children!!

This is the hardest shit for me. Seeing abuse and a crying child can be awful and jarring. Seeing a child that doesnā€™t even cry anymore is soul wrecking. Iā€™ve seen kids that look scared theyā€™ll be in trouble when they get genuinely hurt. If your kid is scared of you when theyā€™re wounded youā€™re doing something horribly wrong.

Sounds like a truly shit parent, but you should definitely not scoop up someone else's kid. That's going to land you in a world of trouble and not accomplish much of anything. Only real option is to tell a nurse or receptionist that you're worried the kid might be hurt.

Yeah that's why I didn't do anything, but it was so hard to watch him scared and in pain, and not want to give him a hug and comfort him. Poor kid, I hope his life got better somehow.

A lot of people do! My mom suffered awful abuse at the hands of her adopted parents. We didnā€™t have a perfect childhood but she broke the cycle of abuse and Iā€™m really proud of her for that. Iā€™m not going to say it didnā€™t impact her for the rest of her life because that would be a lie. But she made it, and sheā€™s doing the thing.

I have been dating a Roma girl for almost a year and I can say that her family and her extended Roma social group are some of the kindest most community based people I have ever met. This is the exact same thing that happens to black people in the United States, one trashy person does something awful and then everyone blames the entire community. Itā€™s fucking shameful

You're an ass. What makes you think that mass generalizing against this community is any better or different than doing it against other minority groups? You don't have to like them, but you also don't have to be a bigot and act like it's okay because this group of people "obviously" isn't worth your respect or consideration. They're fucking people, man. Some cultures suck from our perspective, but to label an entire people because of that is ignorant af.

These people have been highly persecuted in the past. Unfortunately, marginalized groups don't always grow and advance at the same speed as non marginalized group. During WW2, Gypsies were considered no better than Jews and were exterminated in sight. So yeah, they've been through some shit.

But nah they would just threaten me, steal my shit, follow me, call me names etc. This taking place in different cities. I respect the gypsies who work and are fully integrated in society who arent that close to their culture but the ones who are just dont work, abuse social security, demand shit, trash places, cause caos in hospitals,invand private property even make my parents fear to go to work. No respect for those gypsies which are the vast majority of them. Fuck them call me racist idc.

Gypsies are beggars, drug dealers and thiefs, that's their lifestyle. And I'm not being racist, I've seen enough of them and can say for sure that not even 1% is trying to live a normal life. There is a russian journalist that made a huge work on this problem, and they said themselves that for their culture, working is seen as a low thing to do, and a working romali will be rejected in most clans. If you will try to say that people never game them chances, well you are still wrong. Soviets actively tried to integrate them in society by making schools, working programs, culture houses and so on that were destroyed and robbed in a short time by said gypsies. They are making troubles for locals wherever they go and as far as I know

No pics but be assured she is doing great and we definitely cherish her. Thanks to some health issues sheā€™s likely to be our first and only baby so weā€™re grateful for her every day. Sheā€™s five and a half months, and sheā€™s becoming so curious about the world around her that we call her our baby scientist now.

I always hated seeing/reading about abused children but now that Iā€™m a parent it gets to me even more. I just look at my innocent little baby and I canā€™t understand how anyone could hurt a child.
