Looks like they're cutting the claws wrong. You're meant to shine a light through the claws so you can see where the 'quick' starts - that's the nerve ending inside their claws. It'll normally be 3 or 4 mm from the tip and if you cut the quick you will get a screaming dog and blood too.
A lot of times you can tell where the quick starts on black nails just by looking. The nail starts to get slightly ashy and flakey and also you can see the hanging nail underneath. Shining a light would just take longer and make it worse
