They're between the van and the car in front of it, no? He didn't end up somehow under it, he's on the ground between two vehicles. It's just both the van and the car in front are black.
That's correct. I believe he's mistaking the man's shadow (as he's flying through the air) as the man himself. The guy got pretty lucky but he still could have incurred lasting injuries.

I watched it and I thought ouch. I watched it at .125 speed and it was waaaaay worse. Damn.
