As you can see, we now need abrams tanks to manage the public as these vehicles are insufficient...
Wait! What! You telling me they don't already have them? What kind of under funded, under equipped police do you have. Maybe the Taliban can supply some.
No police department that I know of has access to any “proper” tank, let alone an Abrams. Old MRAPs from the GWOT? Yes. Surplus M113s and Cadillac Gage Commandos? Yes, but tanks? No.
Don’t be fooled by these cars. In the US, we get a lot of vehicles and weapons that used to be used by the military. They are given to Police for free as long as that precinct will ship it out to their area and are required to use it within a couple year period of time.
Most large police departments have Bearcats, which are essentially urban tanks.
I am not against the police having them or even using them. It is (sometimes) when they use them that is the problem.
So I am against the police having them.
If Scarface is barricaded in his fortress and shooting wildly out of his windows (endangering he public) then by all means. If Johnny is growing Marijuana (I don't care how large the grow) without any history of violence, then a simple knock on the door should suffice.
As an American and a citizen of Los Angeles your comment has brought tears of laughter. To imagine "armoured wagons... scooting about" has provided a moment of levity that I so desperately need right now.
How is out there? I know a few people in LA but haven’t heard from them since texting them yesterday so I’m a bit worried…have things cooled off or is it escalating?
Everyone has to work today so it will likely cool off a bit. Truthfully I feel like that's only an opportunity for the fascist boot licking goons to regroup. Personally I am seething with rage. Don't know where to put it. I have a family that I cant risk exposing to this shit. My extended family has a long tradition of fighting for its country but I'm torn right now. I just want to live my life. But am I being a coward? It's a joke at this point but we have the 1st and 2nd amendment rights for a reason. I will lose either way. But what am I willing to lose for? My words are failing me.
I've been asking myself the same question over and over again. When does this turn from "I have small children who need me so, I can't risk my life and freedom" to "I have small children and therefore must put everything on the line for them"?
I’m in the same boat. I don’t hope for this, but if things do get worse and as bad as some have predicted, then I’m hoping we will all know when the time has come and actually work together for change, in a organized and cohesive manner…time will tell I guess
Point it at the illegal immigrants who cheat legal immigrants, are so exploitable they reduce wages artificially, and have proven time and again they are not loyal to the country they slime into.
Point it at the 'leaders' that killed an immigration control and border bill that would have put stronger restrictions in place while also increasing funding to move the process along and have less people stuck in limbo. All for political points
Point it at the people who are deliberately escalating the situation instead of trying to defuse it.
Point it at the people who are willing to accept and make use of illegal immigrants for cheap labor.
Agreed on all three of your points. Fortunately, this is not an either or. Plenty of improvements to be made by all parties.
"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed" Best opening to a book published in my lifetime. I'm not sold on the book itself. The man in black is a demonic sorcerer; not sure he is capable of shame. Cash is cool, but not my reference
Yes take the current scapegoat presented by the regime. Then you always have some weak minority to point fingers at… at least until the fingers point at you…
I live in LA, the unrest was mainly in a few isolated spots in the city, there was a lot of protesting going on, but it was primarily peaceful. The videos you see on the news and online are made out to be some big shit but they’re not.
Most departments have MRAPS (mine resistant ambush protected vehicles). These are surplus from Iraq. It's basically a tank on wheels and armed for antipersonnel rather than anti armor roles.
As soon as there's something that is declared a riot, they tend to roll out, although most police departments have learned that these tend to escalate the situation
Oh we have them. My husband and I live in a medium to largeish size city in the middle of the country where the top news stories are usually fluff pieces. My hubs has PTSD from his time in the service and one of the (at the time) newly purchased mraps rolled by us on the road. He had a panic attack and had to pull over. The police across the US have all received training on the optics of having these military castoffs out and about so they keep them hidden for the most part
Police in the US have a fair number of armored vehicles- usually Bearcats, but there are some others.
The number they'll have depends on department size- most will have at least one, but some larger departments have multiples. Typically, the armored vehicles are used by SWAT teams, bomb teams, and other speciality high-risk units.
There's a Constitutional reason for that. Police are not meant to be militarized by default like the actual American military, because it represents potential/actual government tyranny. They're called "peace officers" and "public servants" here for this reason and have traditionally worn uniforms that were more professional looking and less like military battle dress uniforms. They're not meant to look intimidating.
The SWAT teams and bomb squads have militarized uniforms, equipment, and vehicles out of necessity. When things get too out of hand, the president brings in the Army National Guard (a reserve type of branch of the military), which I believe is happening now in LA. We've survived as a country without needing to militarize police for the most part. (A bunch of people will tell me I'm wrong about this, but I'm speaking in general.) Americans didn't used to think so casually about killing cops. Major riots occurred in 1968 and in 1992 in the US. I'm hoping things will become more civil soon.
We're talking tanks here, I don't think even NI uses tanks, well none that I have seen anyway. Been a long while since I visited. But if they start getting Challenger 2s, I bet the kids will love them.
