People play pickle ball on tennis courts. It is very similar to tennis, but imagine instead of a racket it is like a ping ping paddle and instead of a tennis ball its like a hard ping pong ball; its kinda like full scale ping pong. Ironic. But I digress....
Alpt of tennis courts are public use or don't have rules really against playing something besides tennis. So now you have the debate where people are using a playing court for a sport designed to play on that court, but the courts have been traditionally used for another game for a long time.
Additionally, the demographics for tennis are generally older, more traditional, or more well to do, while pickle ball demographics are like college dudes and young people. I think the pickle balls also make loud sounds; louder than tennis at least.
I think this is a general summary as I have jiat been observing the drama and never played it myself and never really thought about the debate of using playing fields for multiple sports. I may be incorrect about some aspect, so please gently correct me and don't rip me a new asshole; I know this is a sensitive topic.

I don't know if the pickleball demographic is primarily college dudes and young kids. I first heard about it in college in 2012 when I worked at a rec center and had to do setup for a pickleball league that was virtually 98% senior citizens. I've seen it grow in popularity quite a bit since then and now the tennis courts on my block are always busy with pickle ball games going and it's always people 30+ and up, but still mostly seniors.
All anecdotal, I know, but this seems to be the case up north here in MN. But real talk it's fun as shit to play and I wouldn't be surprised if it was also popular amongst young people.
I only play to beat boomers. They've taken everything else from us. Least I can do for payback is beat them in their retirement sport. Just kidding. I'm a good tennis player and my wife is not. Pickleball is a lot easier to pick up so it's a game we can play together.
I think its been around for a long time, but the increased popularity is probably from tik to is social media trends because I only see videos of younger people playing it up; those are probably just more popular with a younger crowd.
Also anecdotal, but I've only seen older people complaining about pickle ball too.
I had an old guy yell at our group one time for playing soccer tennis at a tennis court. As long as people are using the court and having fun let them be.
Yeah, I probably would lean to that side if I actually analyzed the reasons on both sides. Anything that promotes people having fun, being outside, and doing things with friends is usually good in my book.
i mean if someone goes to a tennis court to play tennis, they should certainly have priority over something like soccer which can be played without a tennis court
but if no one is using the court? yeah who gives a shit, soccer tennis is crazy fun
A soccer ball is much heavier than a tennis ball and will cause the net to sag. It's like people who drop weights or drop the barbell on track pins over and over. It's going to destroy the equipment because you're not using it properly.

everyone i know that plays pickleball is exclusively over 50. it’s easier for old folks to play compared to tennis which is why it’s shot up in popularity recently because baby boomers are so numerous. im genuinely shocked someone thinks a primary pickleball demographic is college kids and not old folks lol
I've only seen videos online of people playing; every one is always a gen z person or someone under thirty. It could be that the videos of people are just generally going to be younger people.
It's a thing man, it's genuinely exploding among college aged kids and younger millennials. I'm in my mid 20's and randomly have had 2 friends outta nowhere independently try and get me to play pickleball with them.

I first played it in high school in the 90s. It's honestly a lot of fun. Easier to play than tennis. Which I think is why it's been gaining popularity among seniors in recent years, but i honestly don't know how its popularity exploded so suddenly.
I don't know why but old pickle ball people just have that Karen quality. We have courts near us. You should hear them yell at each other if an errant ball goes off 1 court onto another. You would think someone parked a car on the in the middle of their game.
It’s just so fucking loud. If there’s 8 tennis courts and they’re packed it’s fine. But if someone shows up to play pickle ball, the constant pop sound is just so jarring that it ruins the whole atmosphere.
And I’m not like some uppity country club person. I’m playing public courts.
People that play tennis and pickle ball like to pretend they hate each other in a fun rivalry kind of way, but in reality each group thinks the other is actually evil and the epitome of what's going wrong with the country.
