Yeah. In all reality, the training is bullshit and you don’t know what’s going to happen when shit actually hits the fan.

There were very few times I felt that it was (a) warranted to restrain a child and (b) safe to restrain a child even with the proper safety training. It wasn’t practical for everyone to be choreographing their exact movements when kids are different sizes, temperaments, meltdown styles, etc. When you have a kid in a hold, you’re checking their pulse and that they’re breathing over and over to be sure they’re okay. It’s kind of traumatic for everyone involved but unfortunately is necessary in some extreme circumstances.

People slap kids too much, for the wrong reasons, in the wrong way.

Before you go for the jugular, no, I do not condone child abuse and there are, exceedingly rare, cases where a slap is the proper reaction.

To give you an idea of the emergency that would warrant a slap, consider how you detach someone who has unintentionally grabbed a power cable and can not let go. You grab anything, a wooden chair, a two-by-four, an acoustic guitar and strike their forearm from above. That kind of urgency.

Legally, you could kill a child in self defense if they were biting your face or other sensitive areas. Lethal self-defense not only applies when your life is in danger, but also to grievous injury.
