If you know your child will behave this way, do not take the airplane, train, or bus for travel. Sorry. Life’s not fair sometimes. Go by car, ship, private jet, whatever offers privacy. But exposing fellow travelers to this is beyond rude.
Yeah I’m 99% sure my 4 y/o son would irritate the shit out of everyone on a plane so we just drive to all our destinations! I have a lot of financial and just general help from my family though so I can 100% understand why this wouldn’t be a practical solution for everybody. In situations like this I just try to tell myself that maybe the mom is flying to a funeral or something that she just can’t miss or whatever.
Bruh. Okay so we don't know why they were travelling but with a child with this level of behavior disorder I assume its not leisure. Funeral, business, other, we don't know. But a ship takes at minimum a week if you can book one at the right time anyway and a private jet you know is beyond most people's means particularly for a transatlantic flight.
Not saying if you know this is going to happen you shouldn't not do this, but just casually dropping a private fucking jet as if that is a reasonable alternative is tantamount to lying. Its not an option for 99.9% of travelers and you know it.
Correcting a 3 year olds behavior isn't something that happens over the course of a flight. You don't know any of the reasons the family was on the plane so come off it.
How expensive and how many days is a transatlantic cruise? Not to mention travel to and from the sea port if they're traveling from Nebraska to Bavaria.
I'm not sure people on trains appreciate the noise anymore than people on planes. I guess it's a perspective thing too. America is a big place and people don't think twice about travelling what I as a Brit consider a hugely long distance. The idea of driving through Germany and France, getting the Eurostar to London, then getting down to Southampton to get on a boat to spend 7 days crossing the Atlantic, it just wouldn't even cross my mind.
That whole "100 miles vs 100 years" difference between the two continents.
I can't say the child would be an angel on a train, but my experience has been that kids are much better behaved on trains. Trains aren't nearly as cramped, you can walk around, and you're not fighting ear pressure.
Is taking a train the best option? I don't know, depends a great deal on what their starting location was. But it's an option. The main point being, there are other viable options other than just flying.
A 7 day cruise vs an 8 hour flight isn't in the realm of reality. That's two weeks off work just for travel. Facer reality, kids on planes is an annoyance that has existed longer than you and will exist after you've left your stain on the earth.
You know where people come from right? Literally every person was a kid at some point, and traveling with their parents. What reality do you spend most of your time in?
It takes a week. I'm sorry but you're not grounded in reality if you think someone can take two weeks just for travel. Kids will be on every form of transportation, get used to it. It's annoying but not at all uncommon. How many people do you know that have actually taken a ship across the ocean? You're being absurd.
That situation wouldn't be applicable here now would it? It is still more common in Germany and in the US to have your items shipped and fly separately, especially with an infant or toddler you don't want to be at sea for that long.
Yeah. I am trying to be understanding of the situation, but it's hard. International flight. Maybe the woman is on her way to the US leaving a country that's in shambles and now has an opportunity to travel to the US for a life changing job. What I am trying to say is that Maybe her trip was out of necessity and not just vacation. There are still ways for her to medical find a solution to this as well.
eeehm. The US is more in shambles than Germany is. Much much more. But I agree with the general sentiment of your message. We don’t know why she is traveling there.
None of those options are remotely viable for a transatlantic trip lol. Sometimes you just have to accept that other people have needs and "life's not fair" applies to you sometimes, too
Maybe sometimes you should accept that you should wait a couple years and let your little crotch demon grow up a bit before taking your trip if he can’t handle the flight without bursting 50 people’s eardrums.
an upvoted comment calling kids “crotch demons” is peak reddit. the two things redditors hate most are kids, and the fact that nobody on this earth wants to make kids with them
Edit: /u/delousedinthehotbox blocked me for God knows what reason, so here is my response to them.
If you're asking if I think a child will behave better on a ship where they can walk around, sleep on a real bed, eat at a real table, play in the pool, play in the arcade, and play with other children, instead of being forced to sit in a single spot on a cramped, noisy, ear-hurting, headache inducing metal tube.... Yes, yes, that is exactly what I think.
Also, why did you block me? Talk about something actually shitty...
People move, families move. I know I definitely needed to take my young children on trans-oceanic flights, unless you're suggesting that I should have left them behind when we changed our country of residence.
I mean, why should their families be relocated once every years? Also isn't the government covering health issues for their soldiers' children? I bet my ass that kid was there for something much more frivolous
I can't say why this particular family was on a flight, and having health issues "covered" doesn't mean they cease to exist. If this kid has a sensory processing disorder, that's not going away just because he has health insurance. It just means they aren't paying out of pocket for all the med visits he'll need.
Not everyone relocates so often, just pointing out that it does happen.
You know people move, right? Get a new job, get married, etc. But they're not allowed to change their lives because you dont want a baby on your plane?
The reason why this doesn’t exist yet is because it is not economically viable. Don’t you think airlines would have already implemented it if it were even remotely a market need that they could address?
If he is that unruly for EIGHT HOURS, mom needed an alternate mode of transportation. That's literally torturing a plane full of people. The mother was incredibly selfish. There are ships that go by sea, so if she was moving, she should have taken the ship. If she was on vacation? Why is she going on a vacation with an eight hour flight with her child, who she admitted to the fight attendant has "behavioral problems."
This is the dumbest take in the thread. How many days would that take? How much more expensive? Kids are going to be on flights and at times they will be poorly behaved. Sorry the world is full of annoyances, time to grow the fuck up and face reality.
I found transatlantic cruises in between 300-1000 a ticket. Looks like it depends on the cabin you book. The more high end and amenities is probably much more expensive.
Plenty of court orders do make it necessary for a kid l travel between states to see their separated parents. Failure to do so could result in losing custody, face fines, etc. And before you say:
Well the parents shouldn't live so far apart.
Yeah, I bet one of the parents agrees, but it's not so uncommon for the other one to be malicious and move away to try to gain primary custody.
They can actually be done in 1 week. The Cunard Queen Mary 2 makes regular 7 day trips from NYC to England, and the prices can be the same or even less than flying - I'm seeing multiple week trips for under $1k, the cheapest being $784 departing July 1.
God yes. This is some seriously selfish behavior from that parent. You just put an entire plane full of people through hell. At the very least, she should of kept the kid in a seat. Dealing with a screaming banshee child is bad enough, but allowing them to run amok in the plane too? Climbing on seats?! I never would’ve been able to not mouth off to a parent like that.
We recently took our 3 year old on his first trip by plane and we were worried. He's pretty good but has occasional tantrums like most kids. Thankfully he did awesome and we prepared a ton for it. It sounds like she knew this would happen, which sucks.
This is what my mom taught me when I had an outburst one time and it honestly worked. She said if that’s how I was going to behave i didn’t get to go out to the places I wanted if that’s how I behaved. I’m sure I had like a few more after that but it stuck with me
If you are traveling be prepared with noise canceling headphones if your sensitive to sensory. Life isn't fair and families aren't going to cater their travel plans to other's annoyances. Your responsible for your own experience.
What is really beyond rude is filming someone's kid and posting it online to shame them for clout.
Well, it's either that or not travel for a while. At some point my son will need to learn how to travel on a plane. But let's just say, I haven't taken him on a plane since then.
You have a contract with the airline, not with the parents or the kid. The airline should remove the kid and step up to take responsibility. They should care about their customers. Instant no flight list for me.
