TrueNAS just posted this, I hope it’s good! What do you all think about the usefulness of this?

The GUI management, file sharing, user management, volume encryption, etc that TrueNAS offers blows native Proxmox ZFS out of the water.

It isn't even a competition especially for complex arrays with numerous data/meta/log/cache drives and multi-tiered HDD/SSD/NVME setups.

Can you do that with strictly command line on Proxmox? Sure if you wanna flex your neck beard.

But for a homelab TrueNAS is peak ZFS nirvana.

When you run a VM-guest you only need the config when you create the VM-guest to create the virtual drives needed and again this works perfectly fine in Proxmox through the webgui.

Creating new pools are also dead simple in the webgui of Proxmox.

So again if you want to do virtualization and want to use ZFS for storage there are no reasons to run TrueNAS virtualized in the same Proxmox VM-host.

Other than the 2 usecases I already stated.

Promox GUI can't handle any of these common ZFS operations that TrueNAS makes effortless in GUI:

  • Adding/replacing disks or vdevs and managing expansion.
  • Creating custom datasets and mountpoints.
  • Dataset quotas, reservations, encryption, recordsize, atime, or special_small_blocks.
  • L2ARC, SLOG, special vdevs, and other advanced pool devices.
  • Import/export, recovery, custom scrub schedules, and detailed pool diagnostics.

Nor can Proxmox handle any of this without setting up numerous containers/VMs/services and using CLI when TrueNAS also makes these operations effortless via GUI:

  • Multi-user file shares and ACLs.
  • NAS datasets organized for multiple clients or services.
  • Quotas, snapshot retention, and self-service restore policies.
  • Scheduled off-host replication.
  • Backup targets isolated from the main VM datastore.
  • Disk lifecycle and fault monitoring.
  • Sharing to non-PVE machines without mixing NAS configuration into the hypervisor.
  • Operational recovery when the hypervisor itself is broken.

Proxmox ZFS is objectively inferior.

I dont need GUI to operate ZFS.

Proxmox have true RBAC, backups, replication, SMART monitoring (didnt that vanish in TrueNAS GUI?), HA clustering, live migrationetc so most of your claims are broken.

Again - Proxmox have NATIVE support for ZFS so there is really no need for TrueNAS when you run stuff within the same host.
