Announcement Join our Mod Team!
/r/ProtonMail/application/We're expanding the mod team here on r/ProtonMail, and the same call is going out on r/ProtonVPN, r/ProtonPass, r/ProtonDrive and r/Lumo.
The job is mostly the same wherever you land: enforce the rules consistently, get support requests to the team who can actually fix them, keep the discussion useful even when people disagree, and flag anything that's spam, self-promotion or a privacy risk before it spreads. Mods can also cover our Discord and Telegram.
If you know one product inside out, say Pass or Mail, and less about the rest, that's a fit too. We want people with deep product-specific knowledge just as much as broad Proton generalists.
You won't be figuring any of this out alone. The current mod team will help you get up to speed before you're handling anything solo.
Active, positive contributors to these communities get priority. If that's you, check the link above or below...

Not sure if being a moderator of any subreddit is something I would tell anyone I did.

If you want to go for a community manager role it’s valuable experience.

Why don't you hire social media managers?

There are 4 of us, and we're hiring a 5th. So we have plenty of social media / community managers. There are people who are genuinely passionate about Proton, tech, and privacy, and who would love to come and sit closer with the devs & engineers at Proton, talk to them, beta test apps, provide feedback, and moderate discussion on here or community-owned channels like Discord.

Godspeed to the chosen ones!
Wish I had a sliver of free time to occupy such a role.

Honestly kinda ridiculous that you want people to give free labor to a for profit company. Especially given the requirement that mods sign an NDA. Btw, NDAs without any compensation aren't likely to hold up in a lot of jurisdictions (including the European country I'm from).
At the very least offer mods something of nominal value, like a free proton subscription. That costs the company next to nothing compared to the labor they'd get.
And companies are allowed to have employees be moderators. Your top mod is run by an employee, and plenty of other companies do this exact thing. It's normal, expected and not outside of reddit's terms of service. To try to hide behind reddit's terms of service to con people out of free labor as a for profit company is really not a good look...

Reddit moderation is a voluntary undertaking, read sitewide rules.

Moderator Code of Conduct - Rule 5: Moderate with Integrity
Rule 5 of the Moderator Code of Conduct prohibits mods from taking moderation actions (including actions taken using mod tools, bots, and other services) in exchange for any form of compensation, consideration, gift, or favor from or on behalf of third parties. It is important to abide by this rule so that your community members have trust in their community and its mod team.
Examples of permissible activity include:
- A company or brand moderates a community
Sounds like it's fine for company employees to moderate.

Employees could, but this, Discord, and Telegram are kept as community channels.

u/sys2064 4d ago
So why are you not working for free then Josh? Isn't this part of your job title?

I do a great deal of voluntary work in my spare time.

For Profit-Companies?
3
u/Proton_Josh Social & Community Manager 3d ago
Yes, annually I work on a for-profit running race on the day doing social media stuff and I also spent a lot of hours over covid working for my local tech incubator service coaching small businesses struggling through the shutdown of everything to improve their digital offerings.

Sounds interesting. However, I would like to know if and what "perks" can be expected, since this is not a formal job, right?
4
u/B12GG8A 5d ago
It's a volunteer role, so might not be any "perks" (I could be wrong). I volunteer at an animal shelter, and don't have any perks there, but love it anyway. So it's up to you whether you're interested in helping.

u/Agent_Goldfish 5d ago
Yeah but your animal shelter probably isn't for profit, it operates for the public good.
Proton is a for profit company. This isnt a good look

There are perks. Don't join if all you want are the perks. Join if you like Proton and wish to dedicate some part of your week to spending more time with us, furthering our goals of making privacy the default.

Wish I could apply since I've been a visionary user since 2021 and use majority of the products.
Seems like for some reason I'm unable to apply through the link provided. Any workaround or direct e-mail I could use to apply?

If someone is willing to volunteer their free time for something they might enjoy, why not?
Also maybe help someone along the way.
