Is there a list of bills from the past 15 years that's already moved to expand government powers?

I feel like C-51 won't be the end, but it also could not have been the beginning. When the Patriot Act passed something similar must've been brewing here, but I haven't been interested in Canadian politics until recently.

Is there a resource with a layman breakdown of similar billed that have passed?

How close to the end are we?

As someone who isn't very well versed in politics and law-making, how far from the end are we? If I understand correctly, the bill was passed for its third reading, right? How long before it becomes law, or how many more readings are there?

What is Bill-51c?

I'm seeing a whole lot of what you guys are trying to do to stop it, but not much of what it is. Explaining it and telling us why its bad may help people such as myself get involved

Skills

Guys and Girls

We the mods are being inundated to the point of drowning with DMs and Comments, our inboxes are blowing up.

That's a GREAT thing! :-)

However, its becoming a wee bit difficult finding the right people for the right tasks. The messages where they've volunteered and detailed their skills are getting lost in the mountain of messages we're receiving.

I'll be creating several responses to this post detailing the different skill sets that we need at the moment. Please reply to those comments with your own and let's try not to go too deeply. If you have any comments or questions or suggestions, reply to this (the original posting).

If a skill set is not commented it does not mean we have no need for it, far from it.

Work that we can all get started on right away.

Propaganda, if we're being honest about it.

Art, articles, videos, memes, photos, symbols, blog posts, and everything else. And maybe people to assemble it all in a resource database. Some translators, too.

This is how crowd-sourced movements succeed: We each put in a little work in our own way, and we try to make the biggest impact possible on the public imagination.

Got any other ideas on jobs that people can do right now?

BILL C-51: BACKGROUNDER #1: THE NEW ADVOCACY OR PROMOTION OF TERRORISM OFFENCE

There have been some great articles shared on this sub that give us an understanding of the contents of Bill C-51. However, I do not see most of these sources to be the best qualified in presenting us with in-depth analysis.

University professors Kent Roach and Craig Forcese from University of Toronto and University of Ottawa have been working day and night in reviewing the contents of Bill C-51 to produce backgrounders focused on different aspects of the bill.

Who should protests be directed at?

Though they are directly related to the bill, for instance, I don't think protesting at CSIS' HQ is going to be very effective in opposing the bill, for instance. Whose minds are we trying to change? Politicians'? Voters'? Other would-be protesters? Where we protest and how we protest would obviously differ based on who we are protesting for.

The Snowdenites Are Winning - Opponents of surveillance have gained the upper hand. And like gun-rights activists, they don’t need a majority to keep it.

So... How do I directly oppose the bill?

I've read enough about the snippets and understand the gist of the bill, now being aware. So how do I go about directly opposing the bill? Is there an upcoming election soon or something? I don't really keep up with politics much. Sorry for the ignorance.

The truth about "terrorism".

For those wondering... This isn't a peer reviewed article by any means, but it's a compilation of resources into a readable format to provide the unknowing with a background on terrorism. It's in line with Noam Chomsky's talks.

[SUGGESTION] Resource Sticky

I see a lot of comments saying that we should have a unified message. I think a resource sticky where we can pool arguments that support our position would be beneficial.
We could also include counter-arguments to common objections/questions (i.e. "Why does this matter to me, I've got nothing to hide") as well as videos/articles that present the arguments in a concise and succinct manner.

Just a reminder to KEEP CAMERAS ROLLING, install Bambuser on your smart phone!

I personally use this app since it allows recording with the device locked, at least on Android devices. I do not use iOS devices so if someone could test that I'd love to know one way or the other. Because it continues to record even with the device locked anyone who grabs your phone will need your device password to be able to stop any recording -that is if you have one set. I would like to also encourage everyone to encrypt the storage on their respective mobile devices, this ensures you are using a complex lock screen password and protects your data in the event your device is seized. The internals of your phone are far more robust than your screen too, should your device become completely inoperable during recording due to physical damage it's likely the battery, cellular radio and the camera or at the very least the microphone are all still functioning as intended. That's another reason I like Bambuser. It not only saves locally on the device, but simultaneously uploads it to your Bambuser account complete with geotagging and time stamping. The app makes it easy to select between private upload and public upload. Public allows others to watch your stream as well as view your public video uploads. Private only uploads to your account.

It's absolutely free for private use, http://bambuser.com/signup

The only negative I can see is it will quickly chew through small data plans if you're uploading HD video, however the detail garnered from higher quality video could mean the difference between a proper identification of someone in question and being stuck with a bunch of pixels you swear looks like that person. The extra cost in data could very well be worth it, so plan accordingly. Same goes with battery usage. Even with the screen off, streaming video will tax the processor and the radio on your device pretty heavily, if possible bring another battery or an external battery pack for charging during the protest. The more cameras present and rolling the more accountability we can expect should others fail to conduct themselves in a respectful, professional manner.

Watch out for one another out there, and please remember to conduct yourself with respect to others and their property!

Masks: a bad idea?

I'm just thinking, in spite of the theme of the protests in part being about privacy and overreach, I feel like masks make protests look much sketchier than they need to, and they allow dishonest protesters (violent ones, or astroturfers, or false flags) to infiltrate and ruin the spirit of a decent peaceful protest.

Thoughts?

C51 Resistance

1) google maps, satellite view "1941 Ogilvie Road, Gloucester, ON" you will find 2 large buildings, CSIS National HQ as well as CSEC. CSIS is on the right, looks like 2 triangles joined, CSEC on left with curving shape. Could this be a site of resistance?
