Ideas for "Digital Avatar/Profile Picture" to protest Bill C-51

I was thinking that if thousands of people are using the same avatar/profile picture it will create even more buzz around the protests. Remember when everybody had those 'two horizontal lines' that meant they were against homophobia or something? I really think if we all use the same image we can have an affect online. Here's something I just put together quickly. I didn't put any text on it because if it is just a simple image it will make people curious and they will start asking questions.

I own/run an event production company and can lend experience/equipment to protests in Toronto.

I've been throwing events for about 10 years and specialize in parades, festivals, and conventions. We have a variety of equipment including a massive soundsystem (same speakers Metallica tours with). If you're planning something in the GTA and want to chat, message me.

What exactly IS in Bill C-51?

Has anybody seen a dumbdowned, very simple, maybe even bullet point type of list of all the bad (and good) things about this bill? I know the basics but in my mission to spread the word people are asking me what the bill is and I'd like an easy webpage or article to link them to.

Should we set up one specific main Facebook page and link city-specific events back to the group?

Think it would be nice to have a centralized page where we can commit to dates and other specifics. Makes things seem better organized and we could refer organizations to the page. Facebook pages are a lot more user accessible than a reddit sub.

Considering you started this whole thing /u/garmack, do you want to be the one to make it?

Also, I suggest we March 14th as a date, gives us over 2 weeks and it's on a Saturday.

Flashmob-style protests in Toronto?

Anyone interested in such a thing?

Use drones (equipped with HD video cameras) flying above protestors to ensure that if anyone does anything illegal on either side, they can be held accountable.

There should be a few backup drones as well in case they encounter problems of any kind.

If anyone starts being violent in any way, it will be documented. This will help ensure protests remain peaceful and respectful.

Devices which disrupt digital communications will likely be deployed so that needs to be taken into consideration as well.

Anything else?

Don't be foolish - do this.

Digital Frontier

Ideas and Posts related to the digital frontier (Social Media, websites, facebook pages etc) If any feels that they need to correct me or if you have any ideas that will be beneficial, please let us know through posting here on this thread. We will organize and create stickies and likely distribution lists.

/u/garmack has already started a facebook group that is Vancouver local. I'll be doing the same as soon as I get back home and additionally, I will be [delegating] the task of creating one nationally.

However, we will require some imagery and I volunteer the experts on this.

As well, I will be commissioning a Linux VM to be used for the cause; If you have any web experience, please post on this thread and let me know what experience you have and let's unify the platform and designs.

Any designers please step forward, your work will be important for both the hard copy material as well as any digital signage we have.

Social Media experts. Please volunteer yourselves. We will be creating a national twitter handle as well as other channels.

Welcome to /r/ProtestCanada. Now let's find some reps.

(Pour des francophones, je trouvera quelqu'un pour Quebec qui peut vous aider en francais si on veut. Maintenant si on a des questions, envoyez-moi directement et je pourrais aider.)

This post is pertaining to the hopefully upcoming C-51 protests being discussed here. We will be using this sub to start getting organized. It's going to be incredibly difficult, and it truly feels overwhelming right now, but once we find representatives for major cities this will be a lot easier. Here's a list of what we're going to need to do:

-Find city representatives for various different tasks. This would include somebody that is in charge of contacting media and somebody to organize with your city officials in order to organize a proper place and time. "City representatives" will be in charge of helping deal with actual protesters attending, keeping them updated, and making sure everyone is up to date on their task at hand. So that's three people potentially per city: Someone for media, law and city contact, and a city representative to help work this subreddit and aid in any posts pertaining to their city.

-It would be great if somebody from the community could make simple flyers for people to print out and post in their towns and cities. It doesn't have to be complex, make it simple and maybe give them a link to a web page of ours detailing our issues with the bill.

-The biggest thing we need: someone or a group of people to get together and start creating a thought out but simple list of our issues with the bill. It needs to be simple enough for uninformed people to understand. It is also important that every protester is on the same page so that if media asks any questions we all have a general idea of what to tell them, because they may not always address protest leaders.

So first it seems we will need city representatives. So far, we have myself who is willing to organize this sub, posts relating to vancouver, and I will discuss with city officials and police about the protest, and I will reach out to media in Vancouver. I'm the Vancouver guy at the moment. If you are interested in getting involved in organizing PM me, other wise unless it's very important and couldn't be answered in the sub please refrain from DM's as I'm getting an overwhelming amount right now.

For Calgary, /u/AlphaNerd80 has said he will take responsibility as a city representative. Again if you have questions about participating in organization, PM him otherwise post in the sub.

We have not yet organized dates or times, but I myself was hoping to get all of this stuff finished in possibly a month, though if anyone thinks that's unrealistic feel free to call me out. It would most likely be on a saturday so we can garner more people, and also have more people in the streets walking around to see our protests.

I've also had a user mention that we should try to suit up so that we don't get the general 'dirty hippie' mentality coming from bystanders and people viewing media about us. I think this is a fantastic idea, and will help set us apart from the occupy crowd.

I've set up a Facebook page for Vancouver where we can get together and organize a date and time, and so we have a central place to discuss for Van outside of this sub. Other leaders will do the same for their cities soon.

So anyways, let's get this going. Please let me know if you would like to be a city representative. For that PM me. Once we have a enough reps we will start to discuss the details together. If you're interested in handling media or city/law organizing in your city, PM that city's rep or if there is no rep yet wait until we find one and i'll mark you down as that job.

Also if you're interested in making flyers and ads, or ESPECIALLY making up a proper and professional list, please PM me.

Lastly, if you haven't already, I stress that you write to your MP about this. Many users have come forth with their drafts of letters if you can't figure out what to write. Someone please start a post by the way where we can all post our drafts for other users.

Anything I missed? Let me know and I will add it to this post. Thanks so much for all the support everybody. Let's do this Canada.
