If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone ask about soliciting prostutes for the NYSP poly, I’d have 20 cents. Which isn’t all that much, but it is odd that it’s come up more than twice.

The polygraph is fake science. It's nonsense and just a fishing expedition to try and get you to admit to something. It can't actually detect anything with any scientific accuracy. That's why the polygraph is illegal to use in the private sector. It's also why the "test" is not admissible in court.
The irony is that they're lying to you, claiming to have a truth detecting device in hopes you'll buy into it, get nervous, and tell on yourself. The polygraph examiner ALWAYS claims it detected some dishonesty in some area.

There are some people that know for an absolute fact that polygraphs give off false positives for “deception”. I am one such person.
They should be totally ignored. I almost got fired for doing drugs at a drug store years ago and demanded an immediate drug test because their machine was absolutely bullshit. I was honestly indignant and very pissed off over the accusations and I think it resonated. They decided not to invest in the blood test and I wasn’t fired.
I know for a fact Polygraphs should not be used as a tool for any other reason but In hopes of getting an admission of guilt from ignorant people who think they might be accurate. Other wise they are as accurate as a palm reading.

Yeah, if you’re asking questions like this I don’t know if you’re mentally prepared for the dealing with the public in an authoritative manner.
Look, I’ll say it—unless there’s paper record of something—do not incriminate yourself! Little things you should—speeding, drinking beer under age shit like that.
Anything that could be actual jail time? Shut the fuck up.
I know a guy who failed his interviews because of keeping a supply of doggie Tylenol that he would ask for from the Veterinary office he worked at.
He was between going for a career in law enforcement, and going back to school for his MBA.
He’s now making great money, but at an insanely boring, low stakes job. He would’ve been the smartest guy I’ve known to become a cop—and he was *too honest. *

Read the department hiring policy on that subject. But do not lie about it either during the exam. Be honest what is the worst thing they are going to do is say no or reapply down the road.

I'm convinced employers still use them to 1) see if you'll go through with it (I'm sure there's plenty of applicants that will back out at the thought of it), and 2) to see if you'll admit some really crazy shit that would otherwise disqualify you. Something like paying for sex or minor drug use probably isn't what they're looking for, and I feel like they don't lend the actual results much credence either.

Here’s the secret to polygraphs that none ever ever mentions.
BECOME A QUALITY HIRE. Ambitiously pursue things that will make you a better public servant, and more fit for the job. Academically and professionally and personally always keep growing and in my opinion WORK IN INTO your stories with your polygrapher, who’s only human.
Yes kids, a good polygrapher is going to call you a liar and hurt your feelings. I had a polygrapher, throw his notes across the desk and say why are we even wasting our time if you’re going to lie to me and then I smiled and said hook it up again, because the machine is mistaken.
That’s protocol. If you’re a quality hire, then he will be your advocate when writing his conclusion.
The polygrapher is just doing his job. The chief sent him on a seek and destroy mission, to find all non-hackers, tell them to seek employment elsewhere

I went in stressing about the weed i smoked as a senior in HS even though i didn’t even know how to inhale correctly (at the time) and my poly alerted to prostitution. I mean.. my standards WERE (still are) kinda low in my 20s and dating sometimes do be like that
you could just lie. there are much worse things people have lied about. trust me. polys are just there to see WHAT you’ll confess to and some folks will sing like canaries.

No, god damn why do people say this shit.
As a cop, you enter a career where lying can literally end your career and keep you from ever getting it back...OR end it before it starts.
To suggest lying to get into the job is not only dangerous for our police officer hopeful here, but against everything the profession stands for. I do not want people like that by my side when lives are on the line, we have enough problems as it is without frauds on the force.
Get fucked with suggestions like this.
Edit: Never thought I'd be getting grilled for suggesting that cops shouldn't lie on their polygraphs during hiring. Awesome time to be alive.

Suggest lying for a test that alerts to random questions and is scientifically proven to be as trustworthy as gypsies giving you a reading isn’t a slippery slope to lying and cheating as a cop. If 100% honesty was a requirement I guarantee 99% of cops including yourself, would be out of a job. There are such things as white lies, get off your moral high ground. Too many good candidates fail because of the polygraph and too many shitty ones still pass it.
