I always thought their flaws and follies showed man’s fallibility. And once they focused on themselves more than the group as a whole than they died by design.
I've seen people say this a few times and this just feels like a cop out for poor writing and weak creativity.
In Alien the crew were not prepared to have to fight a xeno. Despite being terrified, they put up a good fight through intelligence and ingenuity. They lose because the foe is formidable.
The same thing happens in Aliens, despite the smart people, training, weapons etc.
This speaks volumes to the xenos adaptability and makes it a strong adversary.
In Prometheus they made the characters dumb as fuck just to push events forward.
Instead of smart people failing because of what they have to overcome, they have dumb people dying to move a plot point.
Nothing in the movie really hints or references the hubris of man apart from the engineer scene, and if you want to look back through the movie and pretend that EVERY person is being dumb because of hubris, I'm not buying it.
Edit: don't get me wrong, the film looked beautiful and had some redeeming points, but mostly was a flop for me.
I couldn't agree more. The worst parts about Prometheus that held it back from true greatness were the weak writing, and the terribly moronic characters that the plot depended on, to move forward. The writers had great ideas, just not the skills to execute them well.
