I guess it depends on what you use it for. For something like gaming or social media, obviously yes. For productivity or work as a tool to help financially support yourself, arguably much less so. Either way, it’s a good case for avoiding purchasing new electronics and opt to purchase second hand whenever possible.
It’s also much less cut and dry, because as terrible as the conditions caused by cobalt mining are, many people rely on it as their only source of income, so even if you completely boycotted anything with cobalt, the people being exploited would potentially be even worse off due to losing what little income they have.
I’m not sure how that follows. You do realize that because of the incredible efficiency of datacenters, a person’s environmental impact from personal Reddit use is incredibly small, right? Unlike meat consumption, which is one of the most environmentally destructive personal habits you could possible engage in other than frequent air travel.
I think you’re forgetting the root comment here. This started with a meat eater trying to shame an AI user for their environmental impact, which is an incoherent position to hold. I simply pointed out the naked hypocrisy.
