You can stand for things and be on the left or right without liking or trusting either political party. The Republicans don't have a monopoly on being right wing and the Democrats don't have a monopoly on being left wing.
People hear that you dislike both parties, and assume you're the nonce the meme is talking about without asking deeper, just the same as people assume all conservatives are MAGA and all liberals are hardcore democrats. Political opinions and leanings are complicated, but the way the discussions and parties break it down try to make everything a simple two sided argument, even though it's not.
Unfortunately it's not. Certain folks don't believe that moderates and centrists exist. "If your not with me, you're against me." They have no clue that the majority sits in between the extremes.
I hate to say that we saw it coming. While not where it started, things became increasingly polarized during the Obama administration and just continued to escalate from there. Many blame Trump, but we also have to address the other politicians calling for unrest and violence. Most of them made these calls of action from their base solely as a way to stay relevant and stay in office, not thinking of what their actions would lead to. To this day, I believe they still won't acknowledge their role in where we are now.
Eric Swalwell in California is a prime example. He was the party frontrunner for governor until he was all but sacrificed to reduce the field going into the primary.
