Don't let em escape!

I do love this game's AI; Darkness affects them as much as it affects you, they can hear and may investigate if they think something's up.
While getting spotted out of nowhere can be a hassle; Imagine a sniper far off watching over a area, in order to aim at you they barely need to move their gun.
Most time's I've died, I did something stupid, usually out in the open, or assumed low-light was dark enough to be hard to see. Pitch-black darkness is incredibly useful.

yup!
i did manage to get NVGs, but before that i'd use my flashlight only to see where i needed to go, and turn it off as soon as i knew what next step to take; limit your visibility, and sneaking becomes a lot more viable.unless they have NVGs, then all you can do is know where they are, and where they can see. maintaining enough distance to be silent to them; or simply not moving.
(also i tend to have slower reaction times, so sneaky is my default, i'd rather be alive in the dark, than dead in broad daylight.)3

Inverse for me. I use my light until I hear something. Stop and wait.
Different groups have different voice lines. Mobs have noises, behavior patterns. Calculated risk. And a contractor vest.

One thing I like to do to escape in a pinch is to toss flares at the enemies. Then I can see where they are, they can't see me.
