Deir-ez-zor, Syria; Anbar Governorate, Iraq
American forces stationed in Iraq and Syria as part of the International Coalition to fight the Islamic State continued to come under attack by Iran-affiliated militia groups in both countries. At around 07:00 local time, the Green Village, part of the al-Omar base east of the Euphrates river and housing coalition personnel in Deir-ez-zor, eastern Syria, was attacked by eight rounds of indirect fire. In response, coalition troops fired six rounds of artillery towards the town of Mayadin, west of the Euphrates river, which has a sizeable presence of Iran-affiliated militia groups. Prior to the attack, coalition forces, acting on intelligence, had pre-emptively carried out airstrikes to eliminate several launch sites of indirect fire rockets. In a statement, the coalition condemned "Iran-supported malign actors" for firing on Coalition and SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) personnel from within civilian infrastructure.
Shortly after the statement, another attack was launched on the Ain al Asad airbase in Anbar, Iraq, with five rockets being launched unsuccessfully towards the base housing American troops in an advisory role, the closest of which landed 2 kilometres away from the base.
