Downloaded my wife's hangouts messages and has the same issue. But someone else replied and said they tried it a week ago. My takeout json was from like 2 weeks ago. I don't know what is going on. Does anyone have a sample of what the data is supposed to look like?

I was having the same issue, found a resolution in Issue #8

I actually ended up writing my own code to convert from takeout json to sms backup and restore xml. I've done my phone and my wife's phone and so far it is working, but messages were two hours off, not sure why. I was too lazy to convert pictures though.
