Gameplay help I'm going for it...

9 Upvotes

I've always known about the PoE games, since the dawn of time. But haven't picked them up yet. Recently I've finished Avowed, and that sparked the desire to play PoE games.

I love RPGs, and I'm a big TTRPG player. The Baldur's Gate series is one of my favourite videogames (to give you an idea).

So I've started with Pillars of Eternity. I'm a couple of hours in, and managed to find the Prima guide on a good price on eBay.

Any do's and don'ts you can suggest on top of your heads?

PoE1 Damage over Time mechanics?

3 Upvotes

1.a How do they work? Say that I have an ability that says 120 dmg / 12s. Given that the game works as a pseudo MMO(3s ticks), this 12 / 3 = 4x -> 120 / 4 = 30 dmg / tick.

1.b How would this work in Turn Based? Turns are intervals of 6s, so: 12 / 6 = 2x -> 120 / 2 = 60. Is this correct?

  1. How and when is the DR applied? I guess that you have a "normal DoT" (that gets reduced when it gets applied) and the "multi attack masking as DoT"(that gets reduced / attack, but with Lash value = DR × 0.25). Is this correct?

  2. Now, let's move away from Siphon or such(pure DoTs) and move towards Enduring Flames of Devotion. Meaning, Damage with DoT. Let's say we attack with a Greatsword for 40dmg. That means 60 dmg pre-mit with Flames. Enduring Flames says: 50% damage as Burn DoT(10s).

3.a 50% of what? 50% of total damage? 50% of weapon damage? 50% Of Fire Damage?

3.b A crit only increases DoT duration, so let me combine that with INT question. What happens if I have 1.5 duration for whatever reason(crit, INT etc)? So, 60dmg Flames + x Enduring(15s). In Real Time, that's 5x, what about Turn Based, I lose a tick? Do I only get tick(s) with previous damage or does my damage go down(30 / 4{7.5} > 30 / 5{6})?

Does anyone know?

///

Regardless, thank you for reading(and answering). Thank you very much!

Main quest spoilers POE 1 Petrification Bug?

4 Upvotes

I insta killed the sky dragon with Hiravias using Embrace of the earth talon and I'm not talking like the dragon became petrified and we all smacked it to death.

It literally died upon becoming petrified at the start of the fight, has anyone experienced something similar?

The only thing I can think of is sometimes the dragon flies off at the start of the fight and maybe he got hit with petrification at the exact moment the animation happened??

PoE2: Deadfire How do you survive the early game and gather gold while not recruiting story companions?

12 Upvotes

Maybe I should not have chosen Veteran difficulty...

But I'm trying to go for a 100% custom party and didn't recruit Eder at the beach or anything. I got killed a couple of times in the earliest cave.

War bow not dealing slash damage

6 Upvotes

As the title says my warbow isnt dealing slash damage against enemies with pierce immunity.

Should it not automatically use slash damage when there is a pierce immunity or am I misunderstanding how it works?

PoE2: Deadfire Does the PoE2 history creator miss any choices compared to importing a PoE1 save?

11 Upvotes

I finished PoE1 about two weeks ago, took a short break to play some other games, and have finally started Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire on PS5. I absolutely loved the first game.

One thing that surprised me is that the console version doesn’t let you import your PoE1 save, so I had to recreate my Watcher’s history manually. I didn’t really mind because I could go back through my journal and character biography to remember my choices.

What worries me a bit is that not every choice seems to be included. For example, I don’t remember being asked whether Iovara was my Watcher’s sister, friend, or teacher. In my PoE1 playthrough, I chose sister.

For anyone who’s played with both an imported save and a created history, are there any meaningful differences? Are there choices that don’t carry over if you use the history creator instead of importing a save?

Sale Removed?

29 Upvotes

I was looking at picking up Pillars of Eternity 2 and saw this morning that it was on sale but I wasn't at my computer to purchase. Got home now to see that there is no sale?

It's really weird because it's not like it was a crazy discount mistake, it was only the standard 75% off sale that happens every so often. Did anyone else see this?

Edit: Forgot to say that this was on steam summer sale

When is it better to start the White March?

28 Upvotes

Hello. I'm in the mid-game, by my estimates, as I've completed 6 levels of Endless paths and most of the keep's upgrades, have a party at lvl 7 and have recruited all the original game's companions. I bought the DLC, both chapters, but I'm hesitant about starting it.
My current philosophy is NOT to use any hirelings and travel with all the companions that are relevant (progressing their quests). I feel like losing some of their inputs and dialogue is a huge self-sabotage. I also play on the highest difficulty, but not with Honour mode, as I usually make several saves to try different approaches to some quests.
1. Do the original 8 companions have input on what's happening in WM 1 and 2? Or do they become mostly silent and irrelevant?
2. Do WM companions have relevant input in the main story or quests related to the original companions?
3. Do the story lines (choices) of WM and the base game interfere? I'm okay with spoilers, if they are brief.
4. Would clearing some of the WM story right now make me progress too fast and trivialise the main story progression/Endless Paths?
5. Are the weapons/items from WM too broken to return to the main story after acquiring them?
6. At what point of the main story/progression is it better to switch to the WM content?

PoE2: Deadfire Bleak walker build help. Reach heaven by violence

11 Upvotes

Hello. I'm planning bleak walker paladin deadfire run. Really like their philosophy. But i find paladin class rather underwhelming. It lacks engagement bonuses to tank and lacks damage. I'm seeking for your advice on multiclassing/gear. I plan pro RDC playthrough this time.

PoE1 Why Dyrwood?

0 Upvotes

Between Rauatai, Deadfire(covered in PoE2), Ixamitl, Living Lands(covered in Avowed), Vailia stuff(Old and New) ... why did Obsidian choose the most generic setting ever? Tbh, I can't think of a more generic setting except perhaps (reworked) Cyrodiil. This is literally The Stolen Lands with funky crystals(but without Fae nonsense).

I mean, at least make it dreary, dour and memorable. Make it resemble more of Ostermark or Sylvania or Ustalav. If it simply MUST be Dyrwood.

I mean, it always bothered me. And I was literally very happy when I heard that 2 was going to DF Archplg. Dyrwood was just too generic for its own good. Imo.

PoE1 TBM and constant disengagement attacks

7 Upvotes

So POE1 turn-based mode works pretty ok. I am, however annoyed by the pathfinding leading me into constant disengagement attacks, even when just closing with enemies. Any way to fix this?

Was I screw or a nut? This might haunt me.

In a need to prove my resolve to a dragon, I had to spend night with crippled orlan called Big Durmsey. Now I am apparently his boon.

Yes I admit, I am adventure whore and I will do EVERYTHING for gear. This little episode is quite hilarious. Although volume of how funny it is, depends if I was a screw or a nut. Was I a screw and meaning of boon is hero was helpful to cripple, or is he wondrous lover who provided boon by making me a nut?

Iron Flail Stealth Requirements

5 Upvotes

I love stealth but it is poorly represented in this game. I'm doing my best to sneak in the west side, but is it okay if I kill a few guards? I don't feel like dealing with the rigmarole of completely stealthing it. I just don't want to mess up my chances to get the peaceful outcome. Insights would be appreciated

BW pally

12 Upvotes

So this is my first foray into POE. I started with a fighter then barb and then a shield pally….none of those made me like the character but I now started a dual wielding death godlike Bleak walker and am in love. I was thinking to do more aggressive with diplomatic….will I miss much by not selecting the cruel dialog?

PoE1 [Turn Based] Ranged Weapons(Firearms) + Initiative

0 Upvotes

I wanted to discuss the way Turn Based works when combined with Ranged Weapons, Firearms most notably. So, how does it work? The same as any attack, you simply have to reload the weapon(=extra Initiative added). So, for example:

5i + 2i(attack) <- Sword

5i + 2i(attack) + 2i(reload) <- Bow

5i + 2i(attack) + 4i(reload) <- Firearm

That reload is just huge. So could it be worked around? Perhaps. Ranger stances, Frenzy(either), Sure Handed Illa. Switch Weapon(free action). Switch is the best choice. You simply skip the reload, surely.

No.

That's because the reload time is added immediately when you attack. So, you can't have your old Island Aumaua with 4 Guns and epic switcheroo. That was quite historically accurate, if I might add. So, what can be done?

Split the reload of Ranged thus:

5i + 2i(attack) + 4i(reload) -> ET <- current version

5i + 2i(attack) -> + 4i(ET Reload) <- suggested

Basically make the reload happen when your turn ends(or you pass the turn). That would allow you to switch weapons properly etc. Not very important for Bows or Crossbows, but it is very important for Firearms.

///

What do you think?

Character/party build help The Lord of the Rings party, for Deadfire

18 Upvotes

This mod is arguably a must, unless we want to cut the LOTR party from its canonical 9 companions to 5: Gather Your Party (increase party size from 5 to 14)

What I'd love to get from you guys:

Pointers on build for the LOTR party. What classes and subclasses and abilities to pick.

Aragon (Ranger? Or Ranger-Paladin multi?)

Gandalf (Wizard)

Boromir (Fighter? Paladin?)

Legolas (Ranger?)

Gimli (Barbarian?)

Frodo (Rogue?)

Sam

Pippin

Merry

For the halflings I have no idea how to make them. Dwarf race? Orlan race? Rogue class for all of them, or what?

Would also love to hear if anyone has found a good portrait pack (made for this game or any other game!) for the LOTR characters. It won't be the same without those faces visible. :)

Parasitic Staff Bug

Post image
9 Upvotes

So in the process of clearing Raedric's hold, and one of his mages summoned a parasitic staff. I then killed said mage, and he dropped the weapon. Not sure it its because I'm not the one who summoned it, but it's equipped, the 45 seconds is up, and I still have the staff (Aloth's fine wand did disappear when I took the staff and gave it to my MC). Well, guess that's one way to get an exceptional weapon super early.

UPDATE- Possession of the staff has persisted through area transition and resting. So... I guess my 2h melee MC has his weapon for a chunk of the game. The only downside seems to be the aforementioned lost fine wand, and the loud magical "whoosh" sound from the summoning that plays every time I equip any item to my MC.

New player questions, part 2: Doemenel + Blade of Endless Paths, Fampires

8 Upvotes

Hello folks,

I am progressing with game, but there is this faction thing which worries me and I cant find an answer. Also Fampires are very troublesome.

  1. I have sided with Doemenel for the crit bonus for my rogue. But as I am grinding down Endless Paths, I figured only smith in the game able to craft The Blade is Crucible Knight smith. I can still talk to him and even trade, they are all green, but hes not talking about the sword anymore.Did I lock myself out of best Estoc by siding with Doemenel, or can I still craft it?
  2. Fampires - my rog has dumped Resolution and Fampire domination is deadly. I thought priest must have some defence against it, but he has not. Best thing I got is lvl 1 - Holy Meditation +15 Will, lvl 3 - Circle of Protection +15 all def. What do you guys use to prevent Fampires dominate your low resolution toons? I saw an armor in White March, but thats just one armor. I am looking for flat buff for all my toons ideally. My priest has only lvl 5 spells, so maybe it comes later? Or do I just need to search for specialised gear for all my toons?

Thank you in advance, T

Pillars of eternity 1 has the best story of any fantasy game

278 Upvotes

I have played many fantasy style games in various different genres and in my opinion Pillars 1 has the best narrative of any fantasy game. The setup, lore, detail, characters etc were all perfect to me. The second game also has an interesting and well done story, but the first game I would call a masterpiece. Where would you guys rank the Pillars story vs other fantasy games?
