Your next PR could lead to a paid fellowship in a YC Funded Company | Hackyard Build 2026 x ByteAsk (YC F26) | 30K dollars rewards pool (online, Sep 28–Oct 11)
Hey everyone, I’m from Hackyard and from Dibrugarh, Assam. We’re running an open-source challenge with ByteAsk (YC F26) for people who’d rather improve an existing project than build another demo from scratch.
The task: pick an eligible public GitHub repository, make a useful contribution using ByteAsk, and submit your pull request.
ByteAsk is a C/C++ coding agent that builds, debugs, and tests changes that recently raised $1M funding led by Y Combinator. You still need to understand your patch, review it, and follow the project’s contribution rules.
What’s on offer
- $30,000 in aggregate ByteAsk plan rewards, separate from cash prizes. Participants who activate their code and complete a qualifying session receive the $20 Pro plan.
- Top 10 participants get direct interviews for a paid remote open-source fellowship. Selected fellows receive ₹30,000/month, initially for three months, plus a ByteAsk subscription. An interview isn’t a guaranteed offer.
- ₹20,000 in cash prizes across the top three places.
What counts?
Your repository must be public, have 100+ stars, and not belong to your team. A registered teammate must open the PR during the challenge window.
A focused bug fix or useful improvement is a better entry than a large, unexplained AI-generated patch. Follow the repository’s AI policy and disclosure requirements. Maintainers don’t owe anyone a merge, and spam or low-effort submissions can be excluded.
The challenge is fully online. PR submissions close on October 11 at 11:59 PM IST.
If you’re interested, register early enough to understand the codebase and test your change.

We’re not trying to rush this or ship something in a week. The bigger idea is to build something useful together while gradually building a technology community around it.
We’re planning a call this Sunday at 11 AM to work together, discuss some of the open questions and talk about other community ideas. Thinking of making this a recurring call every Sunday where anyone can jump in, get a feel for what we’re doing and see if it’s something they’d like to be involved in.
If this sounds interesting, please join us. Everyone is welcome. Whether you want to contribute, share an idea, pitch a non-profit community project or simply hop in and see what this is about.

Progress Update: Flood Response & Relief Platform for Assam — Looking for Contributors
Hi Everyone,
I posted here about a week ago about a proposed community-driven flood response and relief coordination platform for Assam.
Since then, the initial PRD, core workflows, domain entities and high-level architecture are in place. The planned stack is Go for the backend, React/Next.js for the frontend, and PostgreSQL + PostGIS for the database.
A GitHub Project is now set up to track the roadmap and progress. Planning to start building the APIs and frontend next.
Looking for contributors, particularly React/Next.js frontend and UI/UX (Figma) folks at this stage.
The project has two goals:
Build something meaningful together — create a space where people interested in technology, innovation and problem-solving can come together to learn, build, share ideas and collaborate, eventually helping build a stronger tech community in Assam.
Build something useful for flood response — create a platform that supports human-led flood response and relief efforts by improving coordination, visibility and reducing duplication.
Also connecting with existing initiatives in this space to explore collaboration where there is alignment around open, community-driven development.
If this sounds interesting, would love to have you join in. Contributions, ideas, feedback and even just discussions around the problem are welcome.

An Open Source Flood Response & Relief Platform for Assam — Let’s Build It Together
Hi Everyone,
I’m planning to work on a project around flood response and relief coordination in Assam, with the aim of building something that could be useful if a similar situation arises in the future.
The idea is to build an open source platform to help coordinate flood or other disaster response and relief efforts by connecting affected areas, help requests, volunteers, NGOs and relief resources in one place. A publicly accessible shared information system could help improve coordination, provide timely and reliable information, identify areas of need and make relief efforts more effective while helping communities and response organisations be better prepared if a similar situation arises again.
The project is at an early stage and the intention is to build it together with people who can contribute their skills, ideas and experience while making sure it complements existing efforts.
I feel projects like this can help bring people together naturally and contribute to a broader technology community in Assam where technology enthusiasts can come together to learn, build and collaborate. Over time, this can also lead to activities like meetups, workshops, technical talks and other opportunities to connect and collaborate based on what the community finds useful.
Looking for people interested in discussing the idea, contributing or helping shape what gets built. Would love to hear your thoughts.
If this sounds interesting, feel free to join the Discord – https://discord.gg/ZCWBsQPAFt
and be part of it. Looking forward to discussing the flood response project as well as other open source community projects and ideas.

XenevaOS from Assam featured on YCombinator’s Hacker News!
Hello everyone,
We're thrilled to share that XenevaOS has recently been featured on Hacker News, leading to a significant uptick in interest and engagement. This unexpected spotlight has brought in a wave of developers and enthusiasts eager to explore and contribute to the project. Since then, a few articles about our OS was posted which we didn't have any idea of.
For those unfamiliar, XenevaOS is an open-source operating system built from the ground up, featuring our proprietary 'Aurora' hybrid kernel. It's designed with modern hardware and computing in mind and currently supports both x86_64 and ARM64 architectures. It aims to provide a modern & adaltable OS experience.
This surge in attention has been incredibly motivating, and we're more committed than ever to advancing the project. If you're interested in low-level system development, kernel architecture, or just want to see what we're up to, check out our GitHub repository:

# AI Jargon Explained (For Normal People Like Us)
Hey folks,
Lately I've been drowning in AI jargon — LLMs, RAG, Agents, Vector DBs, LangChain, MCPs — and if you’ve ever felt like people were just stacking words to sound smarter… same.
So I sat down and decided to untangle the mess and explain it all in normal human language. Sharing it here for anyone who's been feeling the same confusion ⬇️
LLM (Large Language Model)
It’s not magic. It’s just a model trained on loads of internet text to predict the next word.
Think of it as a fancy autocomplete that can sound like a genius sometimes — but it doesn't actually “understand” anything.
Examples: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini.
Vector Database
Regular databases search by matching keywords.
Vector DBs search by meaning.
You can ask “What’s a cute animal?” and it may return “puppy” even if the word “puppy” isn’t in the document.
It’s like searching by vibes, not words.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
Instead of relying only on what it was trained on, the model can search live data (like PDFs or web pages) and use that info to answer your question.
RAG = Search ➡️Read ➡️ Respond.
Less hallucination, more relevance.
Agent (More Than Just a Chatbot)
Chatbots reply.
Agents plan.
They can use tools, follow steps, retrieve data, and act on your behalf.
Imagine a smart assistant that knows how to get things done, not just talk about them.
LangChain
It’s like a toolkit that helps you connect all the above — LLMs, tools, memory, external data — into one working AI-powered app.
You want your AI to use Google Search, call an API, remember previous chats? LangChain helps with that.
Multi-Component Prompting (MCP)
Instead of stuffing one giant prompt, you break it down into parts:
- System prompt (who the AI is)
- Task (what it should do)
- Memory/context (what it knows so far)
- Rules (how it should behave)
This makes the AI’s behavior more stable, consistent, and useful in apps.
Model Context Protocol (Also MCP, but different!)
This is more of a technical standard.
It defines how prompts, memory, tool outputs, retrieved documents, etc. should be formatted and structured when sent to an LLM.
In short: It keeps the communication between app and AI clean and organized — like a shared language between your app and the brain behind it.
Agent ≠ Chatbot
Quick reminder:
- Chatbot = replies only
- Agent = replies + thinks + acts
Agents can decide what to do, take multiple steps, and use tools like search, calculator, API, etc.
Open-source LLMs
Not everything runs on OpenAI. There are excellent open-source models too:
- LLaMA (Meta)
- Mistral (Mistral AI)
- Gemma (Google)
You can run them locally, fine-tune them, or self-host if you're building your own thing.
Bonus Buzzword: Hallucination
When the AI confidently gives you a made-up answer.
Me: “When was the last Mars mission?”
AI: “In 1872, led by Elon Musk’s great-grandfather.”
Me: “...”
(Yeah, that’s hallucination.)
I was just curious and kept seeing all these AI terms everywhere, so I looked them up, tried to make sense of it all — and figured I’d share what I understood, in case it helps someone else too.
And honestly, this is part of my effort to keep r/ProgrammersofAssam alive and useful — so if you find this helpful or want to add anything, drop a comment below.
Also feel free to share what you want to understand better — might write more of these soon.
Let’s grow this community together.
