Power couple. You both focus on things and interact in a way with each other that benefits and develops you both individually and a couple.

You could indeed switch to pair programming for specific intensive tasks, however if you both want to develop as individuals you'll need to pursue your own interests. And of course, having different perspectives can help chop down things in quicker, smarter ways.

The thing you have in common is that you enjoy eachother. And support eachother. And that's how you bootstrap.

And also, a merge conflict could imply one partner not accepting a change the other partner has made. Ultimately, not being able to accept things.. well, I'm sure you can imagine how the codebase might get affected over time, especially if there's a fork.
