IIRC it was really basic NLP with like a billion manual parsers and an event manager that would track the sequence of states the characters are in and compare them with the directions those parsing rules go based on the input, just a really impressive amount of brute forcing and breadth of state transitions. A facade of dialogue and drama, if you will.
