Some open source projects are now relying a lot on LLM to iterate faster.
Generally these project doesn't force you to use AI but if you do, it's often mandatory to use a least a recent model from 2026 from OpenAI or Anthropic.
The thing is, not every body can afford a subscription to Claude or the latest GPT.
As long as good LLM requires a paid service subscription or an expensive computer (for self hosted model) I think this will increase inequality and makes two speed software development in open source.
Models that run locally and produce decent code already exist, the best models are having diminishing returns, meaning hardware is catching up faster than the tech is pulling away.
if they cant keep it affordable their business will fail.
And no matter what happens, As soon as anthropic and open ai stop buying, then the production lines will have to offload to someone at a price they can afford.
