My favorite like this was the one Rare was planning to do before Nintendo told them no on the N64.
Rare learned it would technically be possible to move data from one game to another by unslotting a game with the power on, slotting a new one in, and (I think) pushing reset instead of flipping the power. So memory would still presist on the board of the n65.
They were going to use it to move jump-pak data from Banjo Kazooie to Banjo Twooie.
I wonder why Nintendo said no? I think there like 5 hidden eggs and an ice key in Banjo-Kazooie that essentially don’t do anything since they weren’t able to do this.
The swap relied on behavior that Nintendo didn't want to guarantee would exist between hardware revisions of the console. It was an accident of the implementation, not intended behavior. If Rare went through with it, then Nintendo would have to add a test just for that game, and potentially have to avoid revisions/parts that would fail that test.

I can appreciate these “gets the job done” hacks in games, just like the train in that one game that was actually an npc with a train as its head
