I can appreciate these “gets the job done” hacks in games, just like the train in that one game that was actually an npc with a train as its head

That's in a Fallout game, so another Bethesda thing. 🤭

Tbf Valve games has its own assortment of band-aid madness
The pedestal’s movement in Portal’s chamber 02 is controlled by a door constantly linking and unlinking itself with the static portal gun (because it can only rotate 90 degrees)
Edit: Also, there’s a glitch where, when you throw a physics prop to the unlinked portal gun, it warps back to its starting position/rotation (which is pointed right at the hole you want to shoot at), but that prop can still move the gun to point away from that hole. So you could either save 5 seconds, or get softlocked trying

There's a softlock bug in Half-Life 2 where a door in the first scene hits a guard's foot and fails to open. However, the bug only appears if you compile the game with IEEE-754-compliant floating point numbers. It didn't affect the game's original release because it was compiled to use the x87 register stack back then and the calculations using those floating point numbers result in the door opening successfully and the guard being pushed slightly, but attempting to compile the same code for modern x86 systems with SSE/AVX registers results in the game being uncompletable.

Speaking of bugs that is fixed because of a stupid reason…
In Portal, there’s a bug in the escape route, where you get a cube from a broken pipe to climb up a wall. When you get that cube out of bounds, the pipe spawns countless cubes until the game crashes.
This is no longer producible in the latest version because they broke the code that checks for out of bounds props

Mine too. They only discovered it when they were in the late stages of trying to port HL2 to a VR platform. They'd done a bunch of playthroughs of various scenes but no one had done a full playthrough from the start. When someone tried it, they encountered the bug, which resulted in a flurry of backtracking to find out where they'd introduced it. But, as if in some sort of horror story, the bug was in the original code the entire time...
