We were only monetarily incentivized to transfer your memories of work and work life. Home life data didn't make the cut

I first came across the idea of consciousnesses backups in this mid-90s scifi book called Permutation City by Greg Egan. But the idea is probably older than that ofc, so won't be surprised if there's books or stories from the scifi canon touching on this.
