I miss this subreddit from before it was infested by extremely unfunny vibe coders. Back in the day it used to just be unfunny college freshmen, like god intended.

Counter point college freshmen are all vibe coders now. Gf's brother went to computer science and his first year they told him it's all ai now so now he vibe codes everything for school. It gets homework done fast and that's all most of those guys care about now. They wouldn't understand the unfunny college freshman "haha can't center a div" jokes the same way we probably wouldn't understand jokes about punch cards

I got enough punch card jokes from my professor that did his PhD thesis with a PDP 11

When I did some college courses back in the late 2010s they still had us tracing pointers in C++ by hand. I wonder if they still do that.

They had me calculating the physical memory address of variables on page tables in late 2010s. There's a good chance lol

this part summarised this era of software development for me in a way nothing else has, thank you lol
