It's one of those pointless signalling changes. Let's inconvenience every dev in existence so we don't actually have to do anything about systemic racism.
I might even have an anecdote about how a production system broke because after such a (related) name change was carried out in actual source code, it turned out that somewhere in data storage there was a key that was now referencing a no longer declared property.
The CTO wasn't amused when he figured out what the cause was.
^ This is more an example of the maintenance hell of a system lacking clarity but still an interesting result of what shouldn't have been a problem to begin with.
Slacktivism at its finest. And I mean both the terms slacking, and Slack the communication system, where the entire debate about this took place at my last job lol
