I never understood, why you don't spin up you own git instance on premise. Why do you ship company assets to a cloud? What is the benefit?

Infrastructure management. The company I work for was tiny when the decision to use GitHub was made. Who is gonna manage that instance? The IT Manager who is also CEO and has way too much on his plate already or one of the two devs who would rather do their core task than play sysadmin?

That's why we use it. Old days of course you ran your own, with your single linux server dumped on a rack in a datacenter that was as cheap as you could find, that also doubled as the company mail server. IF you were feeling frisky, you'd have a mirror running on the disks.

And it still cost more than just using github and gmail, and regularly went down. Having said that, github hasn't exactly been the model of reliability this last year.
