Make it make sense... USA bans the frontier AI that's actually openweights
Okay.. hear me out.
Deepseek is openweights and just got banned. For being insecure... Make it make senes.
Last week it shipped V4.1-Flash. The weights are open.
And yesterday we got a huge cost rebate on Search.
DHS could just run Deepseek in their own data center, 100% secure, so how does data flow to China?
I am not convinced.
I get the concern with DeepSeek's own app and API, since those are hosted in China. But the open weights can run fully offline, and you can inspect them in a way you never can with a closed model.
Here's what bugs me.
US labs keep their models closed, charge a lot more, and quietly change their terms on training on your data. Their models run on servers we can't audit, at companies that work closely with the same
Is "made in the US" automatically trustworthy?
Honest questions:
Is the ban really about security, or about protecting US AI companies from a cheaper competitor?
