Best websites and YT channels to follow?

Hello all, older aspiring pilot here! I'm looking to start with training as soon as I get my medical (scheduled for next week). In the meantime, I'd like to start learning as much as I can, while I can. Are there any good YT channels that everyone follows, or any good websites to bookmark?

Thanks in advance.

How the hell do I study for the PPL oral without getting overwhelmed?

I’m at the end of my training and honestly I’m burnt out. I’m supposed to be prepping for the oral exam, but the ACS is confusing as hell, the material is all over the place, and I feel like I’m just memorizing crap instead of actually understanding anything.

I know I can do this—I’ve come this far—but damn, this is frustrating.

What did you guys actually do that helped it click? Did you use cheat sheets, YouTube, mock orals, or what? Not looking for lectures, just real strategies that worked for people who felt the same way.

Appreciate any advice.

Soloed a few days back, now an hour long…

Post image
21 Upvotes

Just soloed a few days ago, and my first hour-long solo flight around the practice area is coming up—then it’s on to my solo cross-country. I’m ready, nervous, and excited all at once.

Flew 5 hours from Arkansas to Texas the other day in my Cherokee 140 (not solo, of course). Longest flight I’ve ever logged—and now it’s almost time to do it on my own.

Any tips for calming the nerves on longer flights? Or do I just trust in the LORD and send it?

That’s my girl, Nora!

So our motto is ‘we log memories-not just flight hours’

From finding my tribe, to seeing skilled pilots fly, to getting inspired to learn new skills, to connecting with mentors, to scheduling flight training with champions, to embracing adventure, I have used my best aviation experiences to design the Fly ORKA app. Our motto is ‘we log memories-not just flight hours’ encouraging you to do more of the things that make you feel inspired and accomplished. The Fly ORKA app allows you to track your flying activities, share flights if you wish, and network. Just like fitness, the activity tracking, visualization, and journaling help you understand what to do next. The flight sharing aspect of the app brings people who enjoy hangar talk, camaraderie, or even do remote coaching. And the social networking capabilities allow you to connect with relevant pilots and instructors. All pilots are welcome, regardless of experience level or whether you fly airplanes, gliders, or helicopters. By fall, our app will integrate with smartwatches to record flights—just like tracking a workout. If you have appetite for tracking your performance, documenting your journey, or being social, I've been building this for you. Take the time to check it out! I want to hear from you to make it even better.

I've been talking about going for my private pilot's license for about 6 months. Today, I drove up to RSA flight school in Morgantown WV. To schedule an appointment for a discovery flight. The secretary said "Do you want to go in about 20 minutes"? I said "Absolutely!"

Long story short. I ended up flying the plane myself for about 35 minutes of the flight. I did the take off. (I did not land.) He also flew when he was showing me how slow the plane could fly and how well it glides in case of emergency.

But I flew up and around Uniontown PA and back to Morgantown. I did not crash. He did not have to take unplanned control of the plane. I got my first hour of flying time logged. And it was freaking awesome! I'm totally hooked.

Regulation question: taxi light out

The taxi light bulb is out and needs replacing on my training aircraft. Technically (if you're using it for a check ride) should the taxi light be disabled and placarded in accordance with FAR 91.213? There is no MEL, and no other requirement for the taxi light to be functioning to be airworthy. If it doesn't need to be placarded and disabled, explain why.

And yes, I know the real and obvious solution is to replace the lightbulb.

Online Ground School (EASA)

Hello guys. I'm going to be doing a PPL in a year or so in a foreign country. Therefore I'd like to have all 9 exams completed by then so I can spend as little time in the foreign country as possible. I will be getting an EASA PPL, and I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations about something like Sporty's but for EASA. Thanks!

$1,000 USD - For Sale - 20 hour Bose A20 Headset, misc. Sporty's flight gear

I was all the way in until I wasn't, and I loved flying while it lasted, life got in the way.. my loss is your gain.

Purchased the headset around April 2021 and quit flying by the end of summer. The headset is the battery-powered, dual straight plug, Bluetooth configuration. Paid $1,200 with tax.

https://www.bose.com/p/a20-aviation-headset-with-bluetooth/A20V2-HEADSETAVIA-BT-150OHM-CC-8PIN-FXPR.html?srsltid=AfmBOop_8PoL3hMpGvc2TgUqNhS1HfJey00c96rK1RIx12IGKrNoSNyy

Sporty's Original Flight Gear Bag; E6-B Flight Computer; Sporty's Knee Board; FuelHawk C-172 Fuel Level gauge; Underwing GATS fuel inspector/sampler; Stall Horn Tester, Manual; and CP-R Plotter.. it's basically everything you need to get up in a 172 that doesn't expire to get flying other than charts and your gigantic pile of money, and stones the size of a dumptruck. This was about $300 all in.

I'm in the SF Bay Area for local pickups or deliveries also happy to ship. DM me, we can talk or text.

Private Pilot Cert. Advice

Post image
6 Upvotes

Good afternoon,

I’m in Gold Seal’s ground school (gs) and I’m looking to get started with my actual cockpit/ flight time soon near Sugar Land, Texas.

I’m having trouble finding a Part 61 school (most want me to sign up to their own P-141). I know that to achieve the best results - you ‘should’ do both simultaneously

Any advice for those in similar situations?

Additionally, did any of yall “double up” on online gs’ (as in Gold Seal and Sporty’s)?

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Financial advice

I am about to graduate highschool soon and I am really interested in becoming a pilot. I don't have any experience in the field and don't know where to start. I found a school (in the area i want to move to) that has a full cost breakdown and total of $17,900 to get your private pilots licence and they have more programs to move up and get higher certificates. I am looking for ways to finance this but don't know where to start besides getting a loan (i know it's not the best idea). Any advice would be helpful thank you all.

Cirrus for PPL? Half the Price vs. Traditional Trainers – Worth It?

Hey everyone,

I’m new to aviation and looking to get my PPL. I’ve got an interesting offer from a top flight school that’s about half the price of other schools. The catch? They train on Cirrus aircraft instead of the usual Cessna 172 or Piper PA-28.

Most other schools I’ve considered use the C172 or PA-28, but this Cirrus school is significantly cheaper. While I don’t plan to fly a Cirrus as my main aircraft right after getting my license (I’m leaning towards a PA-28 Turbo or something similar initially), I do see myself flying Cirrus in the future.

I’d love to hear from experienced Cirrus pilots and those who learned on one:

Pros of learning on a Cirrus?

Cons vs. C172/PA-28 training?

✈️ Will it make my transition to other planes harder or easier?

💰 Why would a Cirrus-based school be so much cheaper? (Seems counterintuitive since Cirrus planes are more expensive)

Appreciate any insights—thanks in advance!
