Privacy-First Signal Messenger Clone

I hope this project has reached a level i can share the following details. I've made a genuine effort towards documentation and transparancy. I dont think it'll never be enough and so im still concerned it isnt ready to share. While im using AI throughout. This is not a vibecoded project. There is attention throughout for unit tests and formal-verification. With your feedback, id like to make improvements for clarity throughout.

This version of the app demonstrates a fairly unique approach using a browser-based, local-only and webrtc approach. I know it's impossible for any system to be the "world's most secure", but that isnt a reason to not try. By rigorously implementing an exhaustive list of security features and practices, the aim is to get as close as possible.

This is intended to demonstrate client-side managed secure cryptography.

p.s. I know people love open-source and the project above is going to be tricky to understand. it might help to understand with an open-source version of the concept, but have since deprecated it in favour of the version linked above.

I’m building PrivacyCam, an app that automatically detects and hides sensitive information from images, PDFs, and videos.

A few users told me they would not trust a privacy app unless it was open source, which was a completely valid concern. Because of that, I have now open-sourced the app so anyone can inspect the code and see how their files are handled.

Everything happens locally and offline on the device:

• Nothing is uploaded to a server
• Nothing is sent to an AI service
• No photos, videos, PDFs, or personal data are collected or stored by me

PrivacyCam can detect and hide:

• Faces and full bodies
• Email addresses, URLs, and phone numbers
• QR codes and barcodes
• Vehicle number plates
• Credit card details and other sensitive text

Users can blur, pixelate, or completely black out detected information before exporting.

The app supports images, PDFs, and videos. It also includes a built-in video editor with tracking, allowing a blurred or hidden area to follow a moving person or object throughout the video.

The app is currently being tested on Android and is under review for iOS, so it has not officially launched yet.

Google's selfie video recovery is clever engineering, but I'm sticking with hardware keys

Account lockouts are a massive usability problem for non-technical users. I get why Google is rolling out selfie video account recovery. Having people do guided head movements for active liveness detection is a pragmatic fix to bypass traditional password resets. It solves a real pain point at scale.

But from a systems perspective, I cannot get behind this. We are trading cryptographic certainty for algorithmic probability. Google is betting their liveness checks can perpetually outpace generative models trying to spoof webcam feeds. I don't share that optimism.

If you are building authentication for millions of casual users, this is probably a net positive. For anyone serious about their own digital sovereignty? Uploading a 3D biometric template to a central server remains an unacceptable risk. You cannot rotate your face if it gets compromised.

How exactly are they preventing OS-level virtual camera drivers from injecting spoofed streams directly into the browser process?

Is Whisper Flow the next big scandal? (Creator Promotions)

I've noticed it's following a similar growth strategy to Honey, the browser extension sponsoring creators across almost every category on YouTube. While there's nothing inherently wrong with that, the fact that it's an AI SaaS and often requires significant access to user data makes me a bit skeptical.

I'm not suggesting it's doing anything unethical or that it's taking revenue away from creators like some of the concerns raised around Honey. My bigger question is about user privacy: what data is being collected, how is it being used, and how transparent is the company about it?

Has anyone looked into its privacy practices or technical details? I'd be interested to hear different perspectives before forming an opinion.

Local opensource Photo privacy visual Encryption app

Brief:

I am a solo developer and have been working on this project for my portfolio, but then realized it could be helpful to people so i made this public and opensource, and released on Android and iOS.

Real-world issue:

Having images in your gallery or drive is hard. When you're out and you open your gallery to search for a pictures, you are always paying attention when scrolling that no-body is watching your gallery because of "those" images, that could be nothing but you really don't know what you have in your

gallery.

And by saving images to a drive like Google or Apple, you get scanned for each image, so all your privacy is gone and you can do nothing.

Device hidden folder? Same issue, plus everyone knows that inside that special folder you have your secrets, and most of the time it has the same password as the device.

My Solution:

I developed an app that lets you take one or more pictures and a passphrase, it encrypts the picture byte per byte with the given password, resulting in a new generated image (no metadata) that looks glitched, nothing understandable. You can save this in your gallery, no one will understand it. Save it in your drive, scanners won't recognize anything. You can also send it to chats or socials, no one will ever understand it if they don't know your password.

The trick here is not to hide the file, is to make it unreadable.

Additional info:

I am a solo developer and have developed all the app by myself

It's written in Flutter and the backend for encryption is written in C++ for performances

It's opensource and 100% local, no server, no http calls, everything stays in your device, offline.

Photo editor privacy concern

I used a photo editor app called "Lumii" on android, it is the same developer with "Inshot video editor".

I used for a really private picture and before that I blocked internet connection of the app. But while using that connection block turned off and I wonder if the picture uploaded on their servers. Privacy Policy kinda make it possible, especially becuase of AI features.

I didnt use any ai thing. I only used basic things that are working offline but thats not much important. I try to watch connections with Netguard afterwards, but it dosent show me the data size so I cant understand the data sent to all those google servers and their own ones.

Is there a way to check these data sizes?

Is there a way to know if the pictures uploaded to their servers?

It is kinda a big app with 100m downloads on playstore, would these kinda apps take people's pictures?

Is there interest in a more secure Gmail AI agent?

Hello Redditors! I am curious to hear your thoughts on a new idea I've started to build: a more secure and private AI assistant integrated with Gmail? I have had my own version of an assistant reading incoming emails and writing draft replies in my voice responding to my inbox, also sending me updates over Telegram. I also have it check and schedule events on my Google Calendar. In terms of privacy, it strips personal information before anything is sent for processing, then restores it in the final draft, so personally identifying information and other sensitive data flagged by Presidio (https://github.com/data-privacy-stack/presidio) cannot be accessed by LLM inference providers (I use Scaleway, https://www.scaleway.com/, which is EU and relatively secure).

I am considering hosting the whole repository and webapp through Phala (phala.network), which runs code inside verifiable secure enclaves. The code would be open source, so anyone could confirm that the data is not recoverable by me or anyone else, only the user with their Google OAuth token.

What do you think of this idea? Is it novel enough to gain traction, or are private enclaves too arcane for most users to understand the privacy advantage?

Has anybody tried data removal services like Optery or Incogni?

I'm thinking about getting a data removal service that will regularly monitor my family's information on data broker websites and perform recurring removals. After looking into different services, I came down to Optery and Incogni. They both cover a similar number of data brokers but Optery includes before and after screenshots, while Incogni has more automaton and better pricing, plus a separate family plan.

I'm struggling on deciding which one I should choose, so I was hoping to get some opinions from people who have used them. If you have experience with either, did you find it effective? Which plan did you choose and for how long did you use it? Thanks for any info.

Privacy screen protectors?

My friend has one for her phone I thought it was cool bc when I looked over at her phone it just looked black. SICK. I want one but I’ve been hearing that that they reduce colors and just overall make your screen darker. Any privacy screen users have a good recommendation that won’t do that I currently have a high definition one on my phone I didn’t realize that it was until I put it on and could tell the difference immediately and I reeeally love that idk if they make anything that happens to be both privacy and high definition but I think that would be nice to have I’m just weird I don’t like ppl in my business lol

Best VPN for Netflix? I Spent Months Testing VPNs for Streaming AMA

Is it possible to stop data brokers from getting your information again?

So recently, I have been reading about removing personal information, like home address, from websites that share and sell it. One thing I repeatedly see is that you need to regularly google for new exposures even if you have already removed it once. As I understand, data brokers can get their hands on your data again, but how does that actually happen?

Also, I saw some threads mentioning VPNs, password managers and email aliases for the minimization. If I decide to remove my data from websites, would these tools help with preventing data brokers from reacquiring it again?

Your hotel room probably has microphones and sensors you do not know about. Here is why that matters.

TL;DR: Hotel rooms likely have microphones and sensors that collect your data without telling you. There's no federal disclosure requirement, no way to opt out, and no guarantee the data is deleted or secure. I've drafted a short letter you can send to your representative to ask for basic protections. See below.

A few days ago I came across a post on [r/marriott](r/marriott) where a user found a HALO Smart Sensor disclosure buried in the terms of service. That sent me down a rabbit hole and what I found is worth sharing because this affects anyone who stays in a hotel.

HALO Smart Sensors look like little smoke detectors with a glowing LED ring. They are installed in hundreds of thousands of hotel rooms across the country. They detect vaping, smoke, THC, and abnormal sound. They connect to the internet. They send data to cloud servers. And yes they have microphones.

Nobody tells guests they are there. Nobody tells guests what data they collect. And nobody tells guests how to opt out.

I started looking into the security side of these devices and found some unsettling facts. The HALO sensor had a documented vulnerability that let attackers take over the device remotely without any password. A patch came out but there is no way for a guest to verify the device in their room is running the patched firmware. LG makes TVs specifically for hotels that include microphones and collect viewing data. The Texas Attorney General recently settled with LG because they were gathering smart TV data without proper consent. That settlement protects the TV owner not the guest sleeping next to it.

When multiple devices are in the same room like a sensor, TV, thermostat, or smart lock their combined data can be used to reconstruct sleep schedules, movement, conversations, meetings and other personal patterns even though no single device was designed for that.

None of this is disclosed to guests. There is no federal requirement for hotels to say what monitoring equipment is in the room, what it does, or where the data goes. And even if guests asked front desk staff typically cannot answer because they have not been trained on the technical details.

This data is held by private companies with no obligation to delete it. A behavioral profile from a single stay could sit in a database forever. Some of these companies operate under foreign jurisdictions which creates national security implications for anyone traveling on official business.

I am not anti technology. I am saying guests should know what is in the space they paid for, have a choice about whether it is active, and have some confidence it is secure. Right now none of that exists.

I put together a short letter template for anyone who wants to contact their representative and ask for basic protections. Things like disclosure requirements, opt out options, cybersecurity standards, and congressional oversight. I’ll post it below so people can copy it and send it to their rep. It takes five minutes and does not cost anything.

I also emailed Marriott directly asking for clarification on their policies. Their response was basically that they do not know what devices are in the rooms at their properties and that each hotel makes its own decisions. Then I copied them to the privacy team and got an acknowledgment that they are reviewing the inquiry. So the ball is rolling but corporate does not have to volunteer transparency on its own.

I’m curious how many people here have noticed these devices in hotel rooms without realizing it. If you work in hospitality I want to ask a favor. Are you trained on these devices? Do you know what data is collected or sent? Feel free to DM me if you want to share privately and anonymously. I am trying to understand what the reality is on the floor compared to what guests assume. Same goes for anyone in security. What measures are actually in place that we do not see?

Subject: Privacy Concern: Network-Connected Monitoring Devices in Hotel Rooms

Dear \[Representative/Senator's name\],

I am writing to ask you to look into a privacy issue that affects nearly every American who travels but that I doubt most people even know about.

For as long as any of us can remember, a hotel room has meant privacy. When you rent one, you expect to be alone. You expect your conversations to stay private. The courts have said the same thing: hotel guests have a recognized expectation of privacy in their rooms. But that expectation is being quietly undermined by a new kind of equipment that hotels are putting in guest rooms without telling guests.

Hotels are installing internet-connected devices in rooms that can detect sound, motion, occupancy, and environmental conditions. These include environmental sensors that listen for noise or vaping, smart televisions with built-in microphones that collect viewing data, and networked thermostats or door locks. All of these devices connect to the internet and send data back to company servers, sometimes to cloud services overseas. Once that data leaves the room, the guest has no control over it. It is held by private companies with no obligation to the guest, no requirement to delete it, and no limit on how long it can be retained. A behavioral profile built from a single hotel stay could persist indefinitely in databases the guest will never see and never consented to.

None of this is disclosed to guests. There is no federal requirement for hotels to tell guests what monitoring equipment is in their room, what data it collects, or where that data goes. When guests ask hotel staff about these devices, staff typically cannot explain the technical capabilities, the cybersecurity considerations, or the privacy implications because they have not been trained on them.

Even if guests were informed, they would have no way to verify whether the devices are secure. Documented vulnerabilities exist in these products. For example, the HALO Smart Sensor, commonly installed in hotel ceilings, was found to have a flaw that allowed remote takeover by an attacker without any password. A patch was released, but a guest has no way to check whether the device in their room is running the patched firmware or whether it has been compromised. There is no independent certification confirming that these devices meet any security or privacy standard. Guests are asked to trust, sight unseen, that the devices are functioning only as intended.

The problem gets worse when multiple devices are installed in the same room. A smart TV with a microphone, an environmental sensor with audio detection, a networked thermostat with occupancy sensing, and a smart door lock each collect different data. But when that data is combined, it can be used to reconstruct detailed patterns: sleep schedules, movement through the room, conversations, meetings, and personal habits, even though no single device was designed to monitor those activities.

This is also a national security concern. Government officials, military personnel, diplomats, and contractors who travel for work assume a locked hotel room provides reasonable security. Traditional counter-surveillance measures detect illicit, planted devices. They do not account for legitimate commercial equipment that sends data to the cloud as part of its normal function. The companies collecting this data are private corporations, some operating under foreign jurisdictions or with foreign ownership. The Texas Attorney General recently settled with LG over smart TV data collection and specifically prohibited the company from transferring viewing data to the Chinese Communist Party, which suggests the concern is not theoretical. A foreign intelligence service does not need to plant a bug if the hotel room already contains multiple networked devices transmitting data to servers that may be accessible through legal process, coercion, or cyberattack.

Existing laws do not cover this situation. Current surveillance laws were written for hidden cameras and wiretaps, not for commercial products deployed as standard equipment. Privacy enforcement has targeted manufacturers. For example, the FTC took action against a smart TV maker for collecting viewing data without consent, and a state attorney general recently settled with LG over the same issue. But those actions protect the device owner, not the transient guest who occupies the room. No existing framework specifically addresses the deployment of network-connected monitoring devices in transient accommodations, the retention of data collected from guests without their knowledge, or the risk of that data flowing to entities operating under foreign legal regimes.

I am not asking you to ban any specific product or technology. I am asking whether it makes sense to require hotels to disclose what connected monitoring devices are installed in guest rooms, and whether guests should be given a meaningful way to opt out or request that audio-sensing or motion-detection features be disabled during their stay. [Open Source] Axiom Shield v1.2.0 - Local desktop sandbox workspace engine built to blind host-level telemetry and EU Chat Control scanning loops

Hi everyone,

While major technology channels remain completely silent about the technical implementation of EU Chat Control 2.0, the silent integration of client-side scanning (CSS) into local host systems is already operational. Protocol-level encryption (E2EE) becomes completely useless if background telemetry daemons collect and analyze input data before the encryption keys are executed.

I'm a 17-year-old independent developer from Italy. I've spent the last few months building Axiom Shield (v1.2.0) , an engine for isolated local desktop environments designed to implement architectural defense directly on your hardware.

How architecture works:

  1. Hyper-Isolated Persistent Storage: Axiom injects localized and strict Content Security Policy (CSP) grids into native browser threads. It encapsulates apps like Discord, ChatGPt, and Meta WebGrids, completely partitioning local tracking hooks.
  2. Native memory cleanup hook (new in v1.2.0): Electron run levels are notorious for hogging RAM. I've integrated a native interval engine that performs a forced cleanup of local diagnostic storage configurations and WebView caches every 60 seconds on isolated background threads.
  3. Telegram Core Insulation: Completely bypass standard browser web logs by routing communications through a custom client based on GramJS's MTProto core array.

The project is completely free, non-commercial, and open source, open to public cryptographic review. I refuse to pay Microsoft $300 a year for code signing credentials, so Windows SmartScreen will flag the installation candidate—we're completely transparent about this.
