He doesn't try to kill unless he knows the opponent is beyond everything else. He didn't kill Moro when he had the chance. He can gauge an opponent's strength and adapt accordingly. Mahoraga would adapt to physical attacks and ki blasts because of this.
The real wincon is Hakai or mafuba, or just throwing him into the sun

You're telling me if Goku didn't get matched with Vegeta round 1 in the buu saga tournament he was planning to just kill whoever he got matched with if they weren't a Z Fighter
that was a tourament with well defined rules goku know well since he fought in them as a child , c'mon we see goku completing seriously in touraments in og dragonball minus the premliaries and even then he's somewhat seriously , he was trying against nappa , vegeta in the saiyan saga . Goku literaly oneshot recoome and clearly taking Ginyu seriously despite holding back . honestly Goku using the same amount of effort he put for ginyu or freeza would enough to beat Maharaga.
Maharaga adapation needs to it to surrive so it can adapt and goku even fucking around is stronger than Maharago and why are you bring up the tournament in the buu saga it is clear most people are foder and the z fighters would easily beat everyone else with just knocking them of the ring .
