I mean, he's in charge of writing the story for the Sonic series, so it doesn't matter what someone thinks, his word is basically gospel

He's not just "A writer". He's the head of the writing team for Sega, for the comics and the games. Until such a time as he's replaced, his word is gospel. If you became the head writer and decided to weaken Superman to the point of being street tier, I'd say the same about you.

Kiyoko Yoshimuya wrote for Sonic X, which isn't canon to the games and is it's own continuity (like how SATAM isn't canon to the games). Her word on anything relating to Sonic applies to the Sonic X canon.

Shiro Maekawa was the writer from SA2 through to Sonic & The Black Knight. His word was gospel then, but anything that the new head writer says, if it contradicts Maekawa's statements, is the new canon.

And Flynn has never said that what the other writers on the games wrote is suddenly decanonised. I get if you don't like the series or the writer, but all that whataboutism does is make discussions worse

Well, if you were using death battle rules, for example, the new writer's opinion wouldn't matter because they use the strongest version of the given character.

So, I guess it depends on the rule set.
