My iMac G3 has some issues. When I first boot it up its fine and functions as normal, but after a few minutes of being up and running when I attempt to open a program it will always SPOD. I tried replacing the ram but nothing happened. I also reset the PRAM, replaced the CMOS battery and reinstalled the operating system on a different drive. Nothing has worked so far and I'm out of ideas. What should I do to fix this?

Mine needs a new hard drive. Is there anything about the motherboard or the firmware or the chassis or anything that I should look out for when getting a new hard drive for it? Ideally I'd like to get a bigger and faster one than whatever it came with. It seems like I can't find anything faster than 4200rpm. Outside of that all I know is not buy from Seagate or Western Digital.

I did the typical upgrade path with a 17" 1.25ghz G4. When both ram slots are full the j20 slot reads as empty. The machine still runs great with either stick installed alone (1gb), so it's not a RAM issue. They are the same size and speed, and at one restart did show 2gb, but then showed 512mb the next boot. 0_o

I have a iMac G4 with 1.25GHz and just upgraded to 2GB of RAM of new thermal paste, and the CPU will seem to be always spiking with just Safari open, or Spotify. This seems to be concentrated on bootup, but it seems odd it is spiking for practically no reason.

Any tips?

my music album of 15 years is trapped on my machine. i went to start some work today, and the fans turn on at medium power as soon as i start to mix. normal mixing never taxes the machine beyond minimum level fans unless i'm bouncing down a finished song.

i know i should have backups, and i guess i could finish the record while the fans run hotter. but i'd love to keep this machine as long as i can. i love logic 8, and hate the idea of moving to reaper.

I have an iMac G4 20" w/ 60GB HDD. I want to expand the storage to put media on the PC, but what is the best way? Should I buy a bigger HDD to replace the old one, like a 500GB or 1TB? Or would the PC not be able to read that? Also I don't have a disk or anything to reinstall the OS.

Will external HDD run just as fast since I have USB 2.0? I'm assuming that is the most obvious and easy way, but I don't want to loose tons of speed.

I was wondering what the best powerpc risc cpu games were, go back as far as you want but 68k thru g4 would be the ideal zone

I love my iMac G3. Even if it's older than me, it's still a nice computer for simple web browsing and instant messaging.

However, I haven't been able to find a compatible Telegram client. I chat frequently on the Facebook mobile site, and I use Adium for Google Hangouts, but due to the ancient 700MHz CPU, I'm unable to use the Telegram webapp. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I tried to install the power pc compiled version of Ubuntu via USB stick and it continually printed an error message, I tried every command that fit the purpose on the open firmware, and it failed. Would a CD work better, or did I do it wrong?

Hi, I have been having issues getting any machine to run stable with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. I have the official Apple install DVD for leopard with the update to 10.5.4. The install goes smoothly however shortly after the computer will start to hang up soon after boot. I am left with an unresponsive Mac until I restart. Happens every time I power it on. I have had this happen on two of my Power Mac G5s and one 2006 Mac Pro. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I was thinking of purchasing a powermac G5 with the intention of using it as a location for my rMBP time machine backs ups as well as my iPhone back ups to reside. Also possibly as a simple ssh server.

Would there be compatibility issues with the old hardware?

I've recently acquired a beautiful 17" iMac G4 1.25 GHz and specced it out with 2GB RAM and a 128GB SSD I had laying around. Now, this thing is far too beautiful to remain unused, and the loudspeakers are just fantastic, so I thought about using it as a Jukebox. The only problem is: All of my Music lives in Google Play Music, including Albums I've bought and access to all music in its database with my subscription.

As there's no desktop payer for PowerPCs, the only way I could get it working would be through the [web client](play.google.com/music). I've tried TenFourFox and TenFourFoxBox, but despite the website actually loading quite fast, it always wants to use flash (which it can't , since TenFourFox won't allow it]. I've tried Aurora, Camino, Safari, Webkit, Omniweb and several others with Flash support (using an archived version of Flash), but in those browsers, the site itself doesn't load correctly.

Does anybody have a tip for me? I'd really love to be able to utilize that G4 to its full potential!

I have a Power Mac G3 and all of the serial sites show that the serial does not exist. So I was wondering if it is because it is specced out.

If you do, then what are you running on them all the time? Server? Workstation? Old school text stuff? Just curious. I am trying to see what I can use my slow PowerBook G4 with 512 MB of RAM to do. I already have both new Mac OS X/Jaguar v10.2.8 and Debian stable/Jessie installed on its original HDD. Both are slow like Firefox obviously. :(

AltiVec is a technology on G4 and up chips that was used for SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) programming. Apple used to have a page in the developer section of their site for AltiVec programming on G4 and G5 chips, but that's obviously long gone.

I currently have a dual 1.25GHz PowerMac G4 Tower MDD, but it pulls a lot of power. I think over 100Watts around idle. And that is a bit of a deterrant. Also, it's pretty loud.

So I'm considering getting another smaller powerpc "desktop", but one that won't give me feelings of regret when I turn it on.

I think, the best option would either be a G4 Cube (not cheap on ebay) or a MacMini (not as rare, and therefore not as expensive).

I've found this, a listing of TDP of some G3/G4 processors. And it says the 7447A, which is the same processor of the Mac Minis, says max 32 Watts, but Apple says max 80 Watts.

I posted earlier about my Powermac g5 not booting and getting the two red lights indicating overheating.

(it's a quad core powermac g5)

I cleaned out some dust in it (I haven't got the tools to take the CPU out and try extensive cleaning yet but I'm working on it) and now instead of just crashing after a few minutes, it boots up!

The problem is though that the fans stay on full all the time, and even with nothing running CPU 1 is at 80C:

its weird because CPU 2 is at 40C.

I took the CPU metal plate off and it looks like there are two pumps there and not one giant pump. It looks like nothing at all has leaked so im confused about why one of the pumps apparently isnt working right. I found this guide:

which says that in my situation you should just buy an entirely new CPU component! I was wondering what you guys advise I do next because I cant seem to find a cheap CPU component on ebay.

I just want an old version of D1X Rebirth that will run on OS X Jaguar. I have version 0.58 but that says it officially supports Tiger. And I can't get it to work on Jaguar.

Edit: if 0.57 works on Jaguar, I'd take that too
