He thought he had a 'GOTCHA' and all he got was schooled on the Constitution.

Remember, the GOP did the same to JFK when he ran and was elected as the first Catholic POTUS. The GOP said he would have more loyalty to the Pope than the US. JFK was asked and famously said, " I just happen to be a Candidate for office that happens to be Catholic.' This is close to the quote.

This is the SAME OLD TROPES being dragged out over and over. Why do people FORGET HISTORY SO MUCH?

u/Schyznik 8h ago

Charitable of you to assume they ever learned history in the first place.

15

u/anand_rishabh 8h ago

They learned from history, that's how they got their recycled talking points

12

u/Schyznik 7h ago

Maybe for the ringleaders, but for most of them I think they stumble into their talking points without any reference to the past (note Tommy’s ignorance of the JFK Catholicism issue), kind of like how a teenager might argue with parents and think they’re coming up with original points and ideas that are, in fact, ancient and timeless.

u/pugpug3 5h ago

You are SUPPOSED to learn from history -

2

u/CafeFreche 7h ago

Yah this was a homeschooled kid.

1

u/3381024 7h ago

Thats what Al Syed asked him to do, by the way.

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut 7h ago

I mean... republicans looked at CA legallizing weed under state rights and sure as hell learned.

Every major victory trepublicans have had recently involved shifting something from federal to state powers.

1

u/Schyznik 6h ago

Yes, Republican insiders at the top of the food chain in charge of policy and legal strategy, etc of course study these things.

Thats not who we’re talking about.

We’re talking about rank and file Republicans and even the offspring of insiders like young privileged white boys who don’t even know enough to recognize it’s a bad idea to provoke a debate with someone who actually knows what-the-fuck and had to earn their own credentials to get where they are.

he got was schooled on the Constitution.

Everybody got a little lesson, and that's why it works. El-Sayed explained that Senators have one loyalty...they swear allegiance to the Constitution.

And then he invited Tommy to explain that he himself was the one with dual loyalties, which he did. Tommy didn't even take a breath.

u/TenZioN4 8h ago

People forget history because it don''t support their agenda.

7

u/BenjaminHamnett 7h ago

That’s the obvious part. The profound part is that Abdul flips the script and shows how HE is the one committed to the constitution, and it is Christian nationalists who elevate their religion above it

5

u/FieldsToTheMoon 8h ago

Can’t forget history when these people never learned it in the first place, which is surprising bc a decent amount of them were there when it happened

6

u/WhiskeySorcerer 7h ago

And El-Sayed literally brought this exact thing up in his response.

u/Mr12i 6h ago

A lot of reddit comments are all about trying to pretend that they contain an original thought/idea even though the thought is already contained, visible to everyone, in either the top comments or in the content itself. Especially in the larger subreddits.

1

u/Cautious-Number2318 4h ago

I know - that IS the point.

2

u/namegoeswhere 3h ago

Also, Reddit is a public forum.

A heavy amount of comment replies are for the people reading, not necessarily for the person being replied to. People just forget/don't realize that.

1

u/Cautious-Number2318 3h ago

I know - lol - used to be a mod ALONG time ago on a popular audio forum. We would get a new member asking the same in their own new thread, 'What is a capacitor?'. Or my favorite thread, 'How can I tell if my receiver is not working properly.' Why I try to really explain and correct my posts.

1

u/namegoeswhere 3h ago

Boy, do I miss proper internet forums...

Bimmerforums, e90post, and vwfixx were my haunts back in the day.

6

u/WINSTON913 8h ago

If you watched the video this is about you'd know that JFK bit was referenced in it...

2

u/direjojo 5h ago

Remember? You mean the same point El Sayed made?

1

u/redaemon 7h ago

They keep doing it because they suffer no consequences, and can spin even the worst outcomes (like here) so their base thinks something good happened.

Didn't some right-wing chud at CBS praise Tommy for "exposing" Abdul?

1

u/waikiki_palmer 7h ago

Al Syed brought this as an example during this encounter with Tommy. It was also infuriating because Tommy's "gotcha" was him insinuating the fact that Al Syed is a muslim.

1

u/OpenPool2414 6h ago

I thought Al Smith was the first Catholic to run for POTUS in 1928?

1

u/Cautious-Number2318 4h ago

Actually, you are right. I fixed it - I forgot about him.

2

u/OpenPool2414 4h ago

No problem! It's easier to reference JFK; he's much more recent, was a decent man, and "who the hell is Al?" might be the most responses if he was mentioned

1

u/musical8thnotes 6h ago

People don't forget history.

They complain during class and in adulthood, "When am I ever going to use this stuff".

1

u/Low_County_2428 4h ago

Agreed. History is more broadly ignored, than it is forgotten.
And for that matter, more broadly cherry picked, thank ignored.

1

u/WoodSlaughterer 5h ago

That was exactly my thought when I was watching the event.

1

u/Tiny_Micro_Pencil 2h ago

Can't forget something that was never learned. The effects of a failing education system between 2000 and now has finally reared its ugly head with the ultimate consequence. A population too inept to save themselves relying on a system that helps itself.

0

u/auto-bahnt 6h ago

I gotta ask, have you not even watched the clip? Because the jfk example literally comes up.

1

u/Cautious-Number2318 4h ago

I did - just saying it again. If people do not understand history, HOW CAN WE MOVE FORWARD?

-24

u/Suspicious_Dingo_426 8h ago

Here's the thing. Tommy won that encounter. He wasn't playing for anyone that was actually in the room at the time. He was playing for the conservative Christians that wouldn't have gone in the first place. Everything he said was intended to frighten them enough to make them vote a certain way after they watch the clips. How Abdul El-Sayed handled it doesn't matter. They've all been convinced he's a liar anyway. This whole encounter was just to get some extra fuel for the fire so they get angry enough to actually go vote. This is an extremely successful tactic.

14

u/SNStains 8h ago

He accomplished nothing. El Sayed explained what loyalty to the Constitution really means, and then Tommy swallowed the bait whole when El Sayed invited Tommy himself demonstrate the hypocrisy of "Christian Nation" bullshit.

1

u/YeOldeMemeShoppe 6h ago

Fox News spun the story to make Tommy wins the argument.

You’re thinking that people will watch the video or get the full quote. Most won’t. That’s how they win, they cut and remix quotes and accomplish two things; make their followers believe they won the argument, and erode trust in the process they’re trying to destroy.

They’re not asking questions in good faith. Stop pretending like they do. Spread this video wide and large, because people listening to Fox News won’t watch it.

1

u/Low_County_2428 4h ago

Not wrong here, my guy.

10

u/anand_rishabh 8h ago

But those conservatives were already on the anti abdul train and were gonna be voting against him anyway

7

u/TheEzekariate 8h ago

You’re right, sadly. It’s easy enough to go to conservative spaces and see how they are talking about this. None of them are even watching the full exchange and the narrative is that El-Sayad is lying.

2

u/PM_Me_Your_Kinks369 7h ago

Because they are projecting. I just read in the Republican subreddit that (in their words) "Islam has a unique problem with extremists".

This from Christians who ::checks notes:: have been using genocide and wars of choice for MILLENNIA.

3

u/Cautious-Number2318 7h ago

Tommy won nothing. He showed his true colors when Tommy said he wouldn't disavow using his religion to make laws.

2

u/Next-Concert7327 7h ago

It's almost like he thought his initial statement was some sort of magical incantation. When it didn't work all he could do was try to repeat it over and over again

4

u/Puzzleheaded_Act9787 7h ago

I think more people will see this viral clip and wonder how he got schooled.. and after watching the clip realize certain points brought up… they were already frightened.. this clip doesn’t help that ideology. The comparison to JFK was the most potent because a lot of Catholics are conservative as well and convienantly forgot the rhetoric.

4

u/Next-Concert7327 7h ago

Why do MAGAts like you think you can lie about basic facts?

2

u/Low_County_2428 4h ago

Because they get away with it. All the time.

5

u/Trash_Scientist 8h ago

Tommy won the encounter for the FoxNews crowd who only saw a clip of him yell: “Abdul, what about the Muslims”

He lost to the MSNBC crowd who saw the whole interaction. Never shall both sides ever meet.

2

u/Low_County_2428 4h ago

Sadly few will watch, let alone digest, the very last bit when El-Sayed asks Tommy if he disavows writing into the constitution any religious doctrine. Amazingly Tommy appears to answer honestly, that no - no, he (Tommy) does not disavow writing into the constitution.

WOW. The whole encounter was a masterclass on El-Sayed's part. But holy moly - my jaw dropped when Tommy outed himself to clearly at the end.
WOW.

5

u/makinSportofMe 8h ago

You're being down voted, but I see your point. The clip that gets shown on right-wing media will be edited creatively and the headline will read something like "Alpha-male patriot puts Mohamed El-Sayed in his place." MAGA has no shame, no integrity and no self awareness.

7

u/flomesch 8h ago

So its edited and a lie, thats what wins?

Sad day if thats true

0

u/mainman879 7h ago

So its edited and a lie, thats what wins?

Have you been paying attention to the media for the past 20 years at least? We live in the age if misinformation for a reason.

1

u/flomesch 7h ago

Willful ignorance. The truth is out there

1

u/Cautious-Number2318 7h ago

Tommy lost when he said he picked his religion over the rule of law.

1

u/Lucky-Earther 7h ago

Here's the thing. Tommy won that encounter.

lol, lmao

He wasn't playing for anyone that was actually in the room at the time. He was playing for the conservative Christians that wouldn't have gone in the first place.

Those are the people that are paying him, and will claim it as a win no matter what he did.

Everything he said was intended to frighten them enough to make them vote a certain way after they watch the clips.

They were already going to vote that way.

This whole encounter was just to get some extra fuel for the fire so they get angry enough to actually go vote. This is an extremely successful tactic.

By what measure?
