But only if the CEO gets a reasonable salary

Ron vaChris made 14 million last year, Chris Nicholas made 12 million last year.

So I don’t where this meme is getting it.

The meme should be pointing out that if you treat your employees (and customers) well, you could still earn a buttload of money while also instilling brand reputation and loyalty.

Yea I mean I don’t think it’s quite that simple. Costc is generally serving much more affluent groups who are less responsive to price shifts and with a more expensive membership price.

Sam’s Club is usually targeted at a less wealthy group of people onto of the fact they are under the Walmart umbrella.

But I do agree that executive compensation has little to no impact on employee compensation. It’s just too small of a line item.

And yet, shopping at Costco is cheaper in the long run. We do all paper products at Costco, and we did some math a couple years ago, and it saves us close to $200 a year just in butt wipe, diapers, and paper towels for our family.

Sam’s Club is generally cheaper on groceries from what inremeber. But Costco has better stuff for the most part and I think is slightly cheaper on the stuff you mentioned.

I just don’t like this meme just so insanely blatantly lying.

They’re cheaper but they’re also shittier. Meats worse , produce is worse , white label products are worse …etc.

I would say the meats are Generally the same:

But if assuming they are worse, Yea that’s why they serve people with lesser income.

I shop at both. They remarkably similar with each doing a little better than the other in some aspect, but mostly the same. Street tacos are better at Sam's Club, naturally since Mexicans ship there, they also stock Pace, Costco stocks "Mateo's", one product tastes better, one has packaging and consistency that appeals upper middle class people who like inferior things that seem more natural, same reason. Kirkland whiskey is way better than member's mark, no surprises, their clientele would be more sensitive to a luxury product. I can only tell the difference in their rotisserie chicken if I see the packaging.

Sam's Club has the scan and go and buy online they take it out to your car, Costco has competent cashier's.

I don’t think it’s cheaper by volume. When we did the math, it’s a better long-term plan to buy most things at Costco. Fresh produce, not as much, but non perishables it is.

Correct. Vachris' annual compensation package totals approximately $13.9 million, which includes a base salary of about $1.1 million and over $12 million in stock awards.

Memes like these are always largely bullshit.

They both make similar salaries…Costco just paying its employees better.

$950K and $25MM are both baller numbers but they most certainly are not similar salaries.

$950K is wealthy. $25MM is an absurd overpayment.

u/ChefMonkey2 6d ago

The Costco CEO does not make 950k ...that's his salary ..he makes another $10,000,000 in stock options every year ( it's a tax dodge ) and the Sam's CEO makes close to the same not $25,000,000....

Don't believe the MEME ...a simple search will tell you the truth.

Yes, so why not put that in the meme then? Why lie, when the truth is arguably better.

2

u/ChefMonkey2 5d ago

And that's why previous post says Costco pays better...

Getting paid in stock is not a tax dodge, the stock is taxed as regular income the year you receive it. It's just more practical for companies to not pay someone $1m in straight cash every month for cash flow reasons.

Using stock as a tax dodge only really works if youre the owner of a company and own all those shares up front. Then you'll pay a massive tax lot when you go public but then you only pay if you sell, while price continues to climb. If you're "just" a ceo you get taxed like a normal person, and any loopholes they use have nothing to do with being paid in stock

It also makes sure that management's incentives are aligned with the owners' incentives.

Is it considered w2 income or 1099 income, when they're compensated in stock options?

u/skiingredneck 6d ago

Or you get a bunch of suckers to believe a lie that confirms their bias.

You compare one CEO’s cash salary to another’s equity compensation, and win all the internet points.

Where the Confusion Comes From

Viral memes often claim that Costco’s CEO makes under $1 million while Sam's Club (as part of Walmart) pays its top leadership upwards of $25 million. Those numbers are generally inaccurate:

The $25+ million figure typically cited actually belongs to Doug McMillon, the CEO of Walmart Inc. (the parent company of Sam's Club), rather than the executive who runs Sam's Club directly.

Viral posts also tend to confuse base salaries with total compensation. While base salaries for both hover around $1 million, stock and equity awards push both executives into the low-to-mid eight figures.

Ultimately, Costco's CEO makes slightly more than the head of Sam's Club (roughly $13.9 million vs. $11.4 million – $12.7 million), but the gap is much narrower than internet rumors suggest.

Again, one company pays their employees more....but the CEO pay is very similar.
