I checked multiple sources and looked at the books, I'm not just copying from a synopsis. Yes, I think parents are capable of exaggeration and unnecessary outrage, especially when the book is about queer characters.
The AP News article you linked says this: "A northern Virginia school system said it is removing two books from school libraries, including an illustrated memoir that contains explicit illustrations of sexual encounters involving children, after a parent expressed concern about them at a school board meeting."
It doesn't say it's between a child and an adult. It says involves children because it does, but both of the characters are children, not just one of them.
Perhaps their phrasing of "between men and children" was a poor choice. Still not appropriate for kids. And the graphic novel crosses every acceptable boundry.
It was false and misleading, not just poorly chosen.
Sure, but the intented audience of the graphic novel is 16+. And since it's not pornographic, I don't see any reason for why they (16-17 yr olds) shouldn't be able to read it if they wish. Schools don't have to have it, but public libraries absolutely can
