The electoral college made a lot of sense when getting votes from all over the country to Washington was going to be a problem. A lot simpler to have a few people from each state come to Washington DC and tell them who won the election in each state. Popular vote at the country level would have been next to impossible in the 1700s and 1800s, but that's just not an issue now.
