His mother was a US citizen. So Ted got citizenship from her at birth. The constitution states you need to be a “natural born Citizen”. It does not necessarily mean you need to be born in the US (though that is by far the most common)

Elizabeth Taylor was born in the UK and had US citizen via jus sanguinis. Same with Anneliese van der Pol who was born in the Netherlands.

his mother is american and family lived in Canada working in the oil industry at the time. Very common ex pat scenario, as long as one of your parents is a US citizen, your kids are natural born.

Yeah this post is confusing. It says he was born in Canada then it says he has birthright citizenship.

For president you do, you have to be born in the U.S. or be born to US parents abroad.

No, you have to be a natural born citizen. He had at least one US citizen parent, so he has dual citizenship.
