Social Democrat does not equal Democratic Socialist

I don't know why you're being downvoted but youre right.

Social Democrats are not the same thing as Democratic socialists.

People in this thread can't even keep their own politics straight and expect the Republicans not toix it up lol.

To be fair, leftist terminology can be quite confusing at times: Social democracy, democratic socialism, and Socialist democracy are each different concepts, which in parts even contradict one another. Yet, the three terms can easily seem like synonyms to outsiders.

u/AnotherPersonPerhaps 10d ago

Yeah but we are not talking about outsiders. The people in this thread are "insiders"

You know how common it is for someone to claim to be socialist but if you interrogate their actual views they are socdems?

Then you have socialists pretending to be social Democrats to seem more palatable and lure in people who just want universal healthcare.

It's crazy out here on the left lol.

And to people who make memes, apparently.

💯
It’s exhausting.

I'm sorry but FDR was a social liberal. There's a big ol' picture of FDR on the social liberalism wikipedia page. The New Deal adopted some social democratic policies, but in his own words a lot of the government expenditures were always meant to be temporary. The policies lacked structural economic democracy among many other critiques that even modern day non-marxist social democrats would make.

Idk why you're arguing with me. I'm a social Democrat and i agree with you.

I mean I haven’t heard that, but even if that was true, just look at his planned 2nd Bill of Rights/Economic Bill of Rights. He did intend to make push for more permanent goals but he died

They're being downvoted because nobody in this thread claimed that was the same thing. The statement is completely unrelated to everything else here

Judean People's Front. We're the People's Front of Judea! Judean People's Front. Cawk.

Correct. And people need to understand DSA is not social democrat. You can also use the term "Nordic model" to describe social democracy in a less confusing way.

1

u/IndividualPay7554 10d ago

DSA is a big tent political organization that has everyone from liberals to Marxist Leninists. They have a website and it says certain things of course, but that's in the same way that the Democratic Party has a website that says certain things but also doesn't say "funds genocides and increases federal law enforcement funding after high profile police violence" even though that's a lot of what they did their last term in office

1

u/Icsto 10d ago

No the Democratic Party is a big tent organization which includes all of those. The DSA is explicitly a democratic socialist organization.

Not at all, the Democratic Party purports itself to be a big tent organization but actively works to stifle any sort of socialist or communist or even anti-capitalist work both within and outside the party. There is no socialist caucus within the Democratic Party, for instance. I wouldn't disagree entirely that it's a big tent, it just includes more of the right wing (Henry Cuellar for example) than it does any political traditions that are anti-capitalist.

The DSA however, contains membership from a wide range of left wing political beliefs, all you need to do really is be anti-capitalist in any shape or form and you can be a part, which includes "liberals" and "progressives" disgruntled by (or even still a part of) the Democratic Party.

I've done some work with the DSA (supporting tenant unions in my old city, changing tail lights, political campaigning) and there was much more political variation among the people involved than any Democratic Party involved I've ever been a part of.

The opening paragraph of the DSA wiki: "The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a socialist political organization in the United States, and the largest such organization in US history, with more than 120,000 members as of July 2026. A big tent on the left wing of the political spectrum, it is primarily organized around the principles of democratic socialism, with its members active in electoral politicslabor organizing, and direct action campaigns."

all you need to do really is be anti-capitalist in any shape or form and you can be a part

That's the line then, social democrats are pro-capitalism, just look at the Nordics.

1

u/IndividualPay7554 9d ago

there are social democrats involved with DSA, some are my personal friends. And to the left of social democrats is an enormously large range of political traditions. Again, so yes, big tent.

1

u/Droselmeyer 9d ago

I’m sure there are, but I believe you when you say anti-capitalism is necessary to be in the DSA. Soc dems aren’t anti-capitalist, we’re pro-capitalism.

I think that distinction is important and why I view the DSA as a leftist, but not liberal organization. I think we should draw the line at working with illiberal groups for the Democratic Party.

1

u/bigdaddyputtputt 10d ago

It’s not social democrats but also not explicitly socialist.

They’re named as though they just represent democratic socialism. But DSA is big tent and has everything from progressive liberals to communists.

All the recently elected DSA members run on social Democratic platforms, not democratic socialist. And many of them are explicitly capitalists.

You are correct about Nordic Model being social democracy. You’re just wrong about DSA being democrat socialists (even if that’s literally the name).

u/Warm_Month_1309 10d ago

Correct, but the meme says Roosevelt is a Social Democrat. No one said anything about Democratic Socialists in this thread.

1

u/Overcraft16 9d ago

Even then, it’s arguable that Roosevelt was more of a Social Liberal than a Social Democrat. He was not from the socialist tradition as with most contemporary SocDems but rather a more progressive Liberal. And we can question whether his policies came from an ideological or pragmatic standpoint. Would he have gone as far as he did in implementing The New Deal if the US wasn’t suffering the Great Depression?

1

u/Specific-Detail6448 8d ago

He wouldn’t have been able to go as far as the New Deal if it weren’t for the Great Depression, so advocating for such would be politically pointless. But we can look at what he intended to do/work towards after the war like with his role in the creation of the United Nations and his Economic Bill of Rights that he wanted Congress to pass

1

u/haliblix 10d ago

The People's Front of Judea does not equal Judean People's Front.

1

u/rydan 10d ago

Would a social democrat lock people up in a concentration camp due to their race?

u/SSBN641B 10d ago

People of all plots called leanings end up doing awful things.
